Re: Co-Numbers
Our Ardrossan Co-op check number was 558. That would date from at least the nineteen forties.

Being brought up in Stevenston (tap ender) I used to go to the co for my mothers messages her number was 178 then they must have had a lot more new members because they added a 5 in front of it to make it 5178 this was in the mid 6o's

Re: Co-Numbers
I recently found the receipt my mother got when she joined the Ardrossan Co-op back in the 1950s, for the grand sum of 1s 6d entry fee. Also a dull and worthy booklet entitled Rules of the Ardrossan Co-operative Society Limited, with such items as How the Committee May Act to those not Purchasing at the Store (you had to spend £5 per quarter it seems to stay a member ) and the penalties for Injurious Conduct ! I enjoyed our visits to the office to collect the divi when I was little; it was a wonderful old-fashioned place, all polished wood and gleaming brass, that you reached by going down an entry off Glasgow Street and up stairs round at the back.
