Bob Auld's Poems

Scotland's Lonely Glens

When mists caress the mountain domes
Among the lonely glens
And exiled hearts remember homes
Aroon the heilan bens
Their blood and tears forged a bond
And heilan hearts will aye respond
Aroon, the world to the far beyond
In lonely glens.

When snow covers the mountain domes
Among the lonely glens
And glory came in songs and poems
Aroon the heilan bens
Filling hearts with thoughts sublime
Deeprooted faith in this misty clime
Resists the crumpling touch of time
In lonely glens.

When sun bejewels the mountain domes
Among the lonely glens
Where the exile heart forever roams
Aroon the heilan bens
In echoing dreams from a distant shore
Thro the hills they roam once more
Sipping the joys they did of yore
In happy glens.

While high above the eaglet soars
Scenes renown in story
Sparkling lochs with heathered shores
Reflecting Scotia's glory
Heartbroken oft with grief and care
Fury's sorrow oft eased in prayer
Still the heart will wander there
To happy glens.

KERELAW WOODS by Bob Auld

Surely but softly around your heart
Childhood memories play their part
Caressed, nurtured and lovingly cared
Made of pleasures you'd often shared
What was disliked you cast aside
Remembering fondly the brighter side
Whenever asked with pride you'd tell
Of the simple joys, you loved so well
They were only waiting to be understood
In the many haunts of Kerelaw Wood.

To a painter they must have been
Full of hope, an inspiring scene
Or to a poet well worth a sonnet
Poetic garlands .to place upon it
Here natures charms were truly kind
Leaving her treasures for all to find
With Ash and Elm and Chestnut blend
A pleasing view around every bend
Sparkling streamlets in the sunset glowing
Mid the echoing sound of cattle lowing.

Remember the Rhoddies by the gate
Where the blackies loved to mate
There I would often spend a day
Waiting for time to come my way
Little to me was ever a surprise
For I gleaned with heart and eyes
And where the trees o'er hung the road
In pensive mood I oftimes strode
There was !peace in, every leafy shade
In every fragrant sylvan glade.

There's many of you I see like me
Have carved Your name upon a tree
It's still there if you care to look
Speaking of you like an open book
Those of you with time to spend
Would like I'm sure again to wend
Among the scenes that played a part
In bringing contentment to your heart
Among them all I loved to roam
Till evening's twilight chased me home.

With the coming Of maturer years
When I'd forgotten my childish fears
By the castle brig I'd often sigh
As the sun sank slowly in the sky
Sunset's glow will always thrill
I'd watch and wait to sip my fill
Or sit in wonder by Kerelaw caves
As moonlit breezes made grassy waves
Bearing the scent of sweet wild flowers
In this never forgotten land of ours.

Often too in a magic moonlit hour
I would pause beside a leafy bower
When all was very still and calm
I'm sure I heard a heavenly psalm
Echoing softly thro' those woods
Those rustling leaves have many moods.
Thro' 'lights and shades I'd peer and look
For nature owns a wondrous book
From scenes like these I'll never part
They're boldly etched upon my heart.

The troubled hearts of many men
In sweet content could live again
There's a haven for all your moods
In the shadows where cushat broods
My heart feels a wondrous glow
As memories breezes gently flow
Life's simple joys fill the air
For you and me to find and share
Fragrant dreams are in every breeze
Just listen to the whispering trees.

Alas but trees to must grow old
The soil around their roots grows cold
Winters with age grow much longer
Stormy winds blow much stronger
I look around and here and there
Many of their branches still are bare
Those decaying limbs soon will spread
Much of their vigour now is dead
Soon it will come to such as I
That tyrant time will pass none by.
