William Hunter

Mr William Hunter, since joining the Ardrossan Town Council has held many positions including that of councillor, junior and senior bailie and police-judge He had the opportunity of being provost which he refused to accept.

He spent a good part of his younger days in England, but he is a Scotsman who has had a long connection with Arran; has a ripe experience as a magistrate and his judgment while on the bench conveys the impression that he possesses a rich knowledge of the police court law. He is keen sportsman, with boxing his favourite pastime. Some years ago he presented a belt which cost close on £70 to be competed for among Ayrshire boxers and at such contests he was called on to present the belt to the winner.

As a councillor he is seldom heard in debates nor does he make long-winded remarks, this is due to knowing when to speak and when not to speak. He was an officer in the army and fought in France during the 1914-18 war

Maybe after the 5th May, George and I will become “prominent Local People” - we’re both standing for Ayr West in the Council Elections.

Mr Robert Allan

Robert Allan is in the insurance business and although brought up and educated in Ardrossan, has resided in Kilwinning for many years. He took a keen interest in municipal affairs, and it was no surprise when he was elected to the Town Council of Kilwinning.

Bob is of a quiet nature, but a very able and sincere councillor as he takes the honour placed on him by the ratepayers as a token of their trust and he at all times gives his best attention to the town's affairs. He has always been a church man and lived that life of quietness, but at the same time being active in all concerns he took an interest in, and in none of them has he been found wanting.

It is interesting to note that all his public statements are brief but to the point which is common with all public men who are of quiet nature. But we consider that Kilwinning made a good choice when they elected Mr Allan to the council, for he has not only the understanding of the ratepayers, but has also that knowledge of public affairs which allows him to speak with confidence.

Baird (Bailie)

Confidence and courage is an asset to a public man and Bailie Baird, Kilwinning, possesses both. But he also possesses that general knowledge on municipal affairs which permits him to speak on all subjects with that confidence and understanding. He possesses that facile style of conveying an opinion, but very strong in debate and not easily forced into defeat against his will. He is the type of magistrate who is easy to approach by the general public and his business life brings him into close contact with all classes. Many calls are made on him to officiate at all kinds of gatherings, and he has proved very helpful in many ways to those who seek his aid either as a private citizen or a magistrate and he seldom refuses to assist the aged or the weak.

"Sanny," as he is familiarly known, is one of the pillars of the town and is the type of public man who is known by all. Since joining the council he has proves a very efficient magistrate, and it will be no surprise if he is offered the provostship in the near future.
