GLASGOW HERALD
20 JANUARY 1871
ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB
The committee of this club, having been fortunate enough to secure permission from the Earl of Glasgow to course over his estate, near Kilmarnock, it was hoped there would be some improvement in the character of the sport they could show, which for a number of years has been slow in the extreme – the scarcity of hares on the estate of the Earl of Eglinton having from time to time led to endless disappointments.
The meet this morning was at Fenwick, four miles from Kilmarnock, and the hour half-past ten; but, in consequence of the frost that prevailed, it was nearly an hour later before a start was made on the farm of Hill.
The ground was in bad order for running – being sufficiently hard on the surface to prevent dogs trying their best – and, as a consequence, we had very indifferent trials, the hares in most cases beating their pursuers.
Unfortunately, the expectations that had been raised of an abundant stock of game on the estate were far from being realised, and this, added to the ridiculously small number of beaters employed for such a country, caused the sport to proceed so slowly that when darkness closed in only fifteen decided courses had been got.
Snow fell during the day, but towards the afternoon it turned to rain, and tonight the thaw appears to be more decided.
The meet tomorrow is again at Fenwick, at ten o’clock.
