Ardrossan Sanitary Inspector's Report 1952

Dust, Smoke, Piggeries Annoy Ardrossan

Complaints brought to the notice of the local authority during 1951 are reported by Ardrossan's sanitary inspector, Mr Hugh R. Seaton in his annual report.
The report states:-
"The discharge of lime, dust and the use of a lime crushing plant without proper screening at the harbour brought forth strong complaints from occupiers of adjacent residential, commercial and industrial premises in regard to atmospheric pollution. Upon representation to the authors of the nuisance an under taking was given by them that lime dust would not be discharged in future and the crushing plant operating in the open air dismantled.

Loco Sheds. "Over a long period of years complaints have been received in regard to excessive smoke from railway enignes congregated at Barrie Terrace locomotive sheds.
"Repeated representation effected only temporary improvement and it would seem that long suffering residenters in the vicinity are doomed to be enveloped in smoke and soot from time to time until such time as the sheds are removed or electrification of the railway is established. Unfortunately neither of these measures appears likely in the near future and only continued representation will keep the nuisance within tolerable limits.

There Are Two. Another section of the report states:-
"There are two piggery establishments in the burgh, one of which is totally enclosed and is kept in excellent condition and free from nuisance.
"The other one has been the subject of adverse reports for many years. The premises are not properly enclosed and consist of a number of pig houses untidily scattered over an area of ground in the midst of dwelling houses and are the cause of complaints of offensive odour and harbourage of vermin.
"Repeated attempts have been made by the local authority to have the area cleared or to have the premises brought up to a standard in keeping with modern practice and design but with very little success. "It is true that the owner has from time to time demolished the most dilapidated and vermin riddled pig houses and replaced them with new buildings and that rat catchers have been employed in an effort to eradicate the rat menace.

Blot. "The general standard of cleanliness of the premises is far from satisfactory and the whole area is usually in an untidy condition and a blot on the landscape. "It appears that no satisfactory solution to the problem can be found and until such time as the Defence Regulations are no longer operative and existing legislation is revised these premises will continue to be a nuisance and annoyance to residenters in the neighbourhood."
