LAUNCH OF NEW LIFEBOAT AT ARDROSSAN - 'FAIR MAID OF PERTH'

The handsome new lifeboat which has been presented to the Ardrossan Station by Mr Peter Reid, of London, was formally presented to the town on Saturday, and was launched, the circumstances being marked by every symptom of rejoicing.

A little before midday the various public works were closed; and from all the vessels in the harbour and many of the principal houses a gay display of bunting was exhibited.

The weather turned out beautiful, though the morning was marked by the prevalence of heavy rain.

About one o'clock, a procession was formed near the Town Hall, and marched to the end of South Crescent, returning by Princes Street, Glasgow Street and Montgomerie Street to the old harbour, where the ceremonies of presentation and launching were performed.

The procession embraced the 4th A.V.A. Volunteers, under the command of Lieut. Wilkie, and headed by the Dalry Instrumental Band; the lifeboat, with twelve of a crew, drawn by four horses, gaily decorated; Captain Robertson and the members of the Committee; the Provost and Town Council of Ardrossan; the workmen of Messrs Barr & Shearer, and Messrs P. Barclay & Sons, Shipbuilders, Sailmakers, Engineers, etc; Masonic Lodge Neptune, Kilwinning (No. 442) and Stevenston, Thistle and Rose, headed by the Kilwinning Instrumental Band.

The procession was followed by large crowds who evinced great interest in the proceeding, and many of those who took part in it carried flags and working models of their handicraft.

CRICKET – FINAL TIE FOR THE EARL OF EGLINTON’S CUP
AYR v. ARDROSSAN

This cup was presented by Lord Eglinton to be played for annually by the cricket clubs of Ayrshire. It is a beautiful piece of silver plate, gold-gilt, and comprises a jug with two cups, which are fitted into a neat case, covered with Morocco leather, on the lid of which is a silver plate with the arms and motto of the Earl of Eglinton.

The matches are arranged by the clubs in the three districts of the county being drawn, then the winning clubs of each district play off, the final tie being played at Eglinton Castle, and any club winning the cup three years in succession to retain it.

The cup was first presented in 1867, when it was carried off by the Irvine Eglinton; in 1868 the Ayr club gained it; in 1869 the Ayr Eglinton won it, and this year the Ayr club have again been victorious.

These matches are entered into with commendable spirit by the clubs in the county, and this season some keen, close and exciting games have taken place.

The match last Saturday at Eglinton Castle caused considerable interest. Both clubs turned out strong teams, but the bowling and fielding of the Ayr players secured them an easy victory.

The Ardrossan team comprised: - McKelvie, Stewart, Patrick, Shearer, Galt, Johnston, Stevens, Blair, Ellis, Wood, and Barrie.
