STEAMER ASHORE AT ARDROSSAN

About eleven o’clock yesterday morning the steamer CLAN DAVIDSON, while attempting to enter Ardrossan Harbour, was, through the severity of the weather, driven past the entrance, and took the ground on the shore side of the breakwater.

A strong north-westerly breeze was blowing when the accident occurred, and the tide was about full.

Before taking the ground the harbour tug proceeded to her assistance, but on attempting to fasten a hawser the tug had her funnel carried away, and could therefore render no aid.

The propeller of the stranded steamer was kept going for a considerable time after she took the ground, while a couple of ropes were made fast to the pier and kept working by the aid of a winch on board, but these efforts failed to produce any effect.

The CLAN DAVIDSON was bound from Glasgow for Ardrossan to load. It is expected she will be easily got off, and as she lies on a sandy bottom she is likely to escape serious damage.

ARDROSSAN POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The monthly meeting of Police Commissioners was held on Monday evening under the presidency of Bailie Hogarth.

The chairman reported that the Works Committee had examined the drains in Glasgow Street and Glasgow Lane, that in the lane they had ordered it to be cleaned at once, which had been done, and that the drain in Glasgow Street had been opened in several places and found to be partially choked.

It was agreed to accept the offer of Andrew Knox for cleaning out the ashpits under the supervision of the sanitary inspector.

A discussion followed as to the right of parties cleaning their pavements opposite their houses, etc., but the matter was ultimately delayed.

The half-yearly report of the burgh analyst stated that no samples had been submitted for examination under the Food and Drug Act either by the inspector or any private person. Some conversation followed but no action was taken.

The sanitary inspector reported that the town was in a clean state.

FLOATING OF THE STRANDED STEAMER AT ARDROSSAN

The most strenuous efforts were made at high water on Friday night to float the S.S. CLAN DAVIDSON, Captain Jack.

The water ballast was all pumped out and part of her bunker coal discharged.

In addition to the harbour tug, two powerful tug steamers from the Clyde were attached to the steamer. Two railway locomotives were also attached, while the stranded steamer’s propeller was kept going.

These combined efforts, however, failed to move her from the sand.

Similar efforts were made on Saturday, and were eventually successful.

The CLAN DAVIDSON was towed round to the harbour, and was found to be making no water. She will require to dock, however, for survey.
