Dear list:
Doe's anyone know if the "Wandhouse" in Stevenston still stands? It was sited betwixt the Stevenston quarry and the Glasgow and South Western Railway.

My GGG-grandfather lived there. It was in and around the Wandhouse in the marshy ground that the miners' wife's and daughters gathered wands of reeds, which were made into creels. The creels in turn were used by the womenfolk to carry the coals from the
coalface to the surface. Francis Love, a weaver, poet, and songwriter lived in the Wandhouse as apposed to the weavers brae.
Thanks
Bill Love

Hi Bill,
Treat this as a long shot! <pun> I think Ardeer golf club was in the area you mention until the ICI Nylon Plant was built on the site opening in 1969. The golf club moved to the top end of the town at that time. Be interesting to know if the history of the Golf Club has been recorded and if there is any mention of the Wandhouse building. My guess at a foundation date for the golf club would be the 1880s.
