HANDSOME PRESENT FOR DALRY READING ROOM

Mrs Edmonstone, and Miss Smith Neil, Hayock Lodge, Stevenston, forwarded last week to the keeper of the rooms a very beautiful megalethoscope, and these ladies have since intimated that the instrument is to be placed at the disposal of the subscribers.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

This board met yesterday – Mr Gavin Fullarton of Kerelaw in the chair.

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Dr. Gaff, Mr James Anderson, M.A., Edinburgh, was unanimously elected master of Ardeer School.

The treasurer’s balance sheet from 12 April till 15th May, 1873, was submitted and approved of – the receipts for the period being £43 15s 2½d, and the expenditure £43 15s 2½d.

CASUALTY OF WAR
1 JANUARY 1917

Died at sea on the S.S. IVERNIA, JAMES FREW, (60), donkeyman, born Stevenston – Theatre of war, at sea – husband of the late Annie Frew; and son of David and Jane Frew.

[On the 1st of January 1917, the S.S. IVERNIA was carrying 2,400 British Troops from Marseille to Alexandria, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine, UB-47, in the Kythira Strait, Greece.]

Stevenston:
The children attending Stevenston Parish Church Sabbath School received their annual treat in the shape of a service of fruit, etc. About 300 were present – the Rev. John Grahame presiding.

The children were suitably addressed by the chairman and the most deserving scholars received prizes of books.

Stevenston:
Rev. R. J. Kyd, parish minister, has received from a number of gentlemen the sum of £29 6s to supply coals to needy people in the village – 114 tons of coal were distributed.

Watchnight services were held in the U.P. Church and special services in the Parish Church. Most of the shops were open, Wednesday first being the merchant’s holiday. Works in the district are closed for the usual holidays. The Sabbath school scholars connected with the Parish Church had their usual treat, and about 350 attended. A large number of prizes were distributed among the scholars. The Good Templars held a soiree and concerts in Woodside Hall in the evening – Mr McKnight in the chair.

STEVENSTON PROPERTY SALES

During the past year there has been an extraordinary demand for house property. Twenty sales of property have taken place, realising a gross sum of £2500 - £400 or £500 more than the same properties would have produced if they had been sold a year previously.

Of the total purchases of property, 17 have been by working men, mostly miners, amounting in the gross to £1800. In addition to the sum paid for properties by miners, at least £300 has been expended by them in rebuilding and repairs.

Overcrowding – The census returns and the valuation roll show that a population of 2177 is housed by property having a gross rental of only £2351, an average of little more than £1 per head of the population per annum.

The position of Stevenston village with regard to house accommodation is still more apparent when compared to the portion of Saltcoats in Stevenston parish. For a population of 1624, the gross rental of the house property in this part of Saltcoats is £2470 – this is to say, a population in Stevenston village of 553 more than in this part of Saltcoats, is provided with house accommodation at an annual rental of £129 less; or in another light, if the inhabitants of this village were to provide themselves with house room on even the moderate average of Saltcoats, more than 550 of the people would be without house shelter of any kind.

THE DISTRESS IN THE COUNTRY

The Rev. John Grahame, minister of Stevenston Parish Church, has completed the distribution of a large quantity of coals, provided through the generosity of several friends connected with the parish, among whom were Messrs Patrick Warner of Ardeer, who contributed £10; F. James, Cheltenham, £5; A. W. R. Cuninghame of Auchenharvie, £5; The Right Hon, Earl of Eglinton, price of 10 tons; Nobel’s Explosives Company, £2; and various sums of £1 downwards.

The farmers kindly gave free cartage.
