REPORT ON THE EXPLOSION AT ARDEER

The report on the explosion of nitro-glycerine which occurred in one of the washing houses of the factory of Nobel’s Explosives Company at Ardeer, near Stevenston, on the 9th of January, which was made to the Home Secretary, is issued in a blue-book.

Captain J. H. Thomson, Chief Inspector of Explosives, goes carefully and minutely into all the probably causes that might have led to the accident. He points out that John Howie’s character as an experienced and careful man renders it improbable that he was guilty of any reckless act, such as smoking, or of any gross negligence or carelessness. The probability is that Howie was engaged in the operation of skimming and it was somewhat in connection with this operation that the accident occurred.

Finally, Captain Thomson attaches no blame to either the company or the deceased man. He adds that there is one lesson from the accident – namely, the danger arising from the use of skimmers with long metal handles.
