BOATING AT SALTCOATS

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council the Shores Committee recommended that a site be granted on the West Beach to Mr James Boyd, boat-hirer, Ardrossan, and permission given to him to erect a gangway to the water’s edge on a straight line from the Esplanade opposite the kiosk.

The convenor, Mr H. M. Arnott, said that the Council always hoped to have more boating facilities at the West Shore, and Mr Boyd had come forward and offered to make a gangway and erect a house for storing fishing tackle, etc.

He moved that permission be granted. This was unanimously agreed to.

POSITION OF SALTCOATS MEDICAL OFFICER

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council – Provost Donaldson presiding – a letter was read from the Local Government Board dealing with the resolution of the Council that it was not satisfactory that their Medical Officer should also be Medical Officer for the County, and requesting the Board to consent to the appointment of an independent Medical Officer.

The reply stated that the Local Authority would require to pass a specific resolution deposing the Medical Officer from office before the Board could consider the application, and on the information before the Board they would not be prepared to sanction his removal.

The Council agreed to go no further in the matter.

IMPROVING SALTCOATS BRAES

Saltcoats Town Council had under discussion at their monthly meeting a motion by Mr H. M. Arnott to construct a roadway 9 feet broad between the Braes and Windmill Street. He proposed to get the unemployed to gather the stones in the Harbour Bay, make the roadway, and concrete the sidewall.

Mr Blakely pointed out that it would be dangerous to remove the large stones, as they were very necessary for breaking the force of the waves.

After further discussion, the matter was remitted to the Shores Committee to consider and report.

CURIOUS DROWNING ACCIDENT AT SALTCOATS

Yesterday afternoon an accident occurred at the North Pans bathing pond, Saltcoats, resulting in the death of TERENCE QUIN, (65), hairdresser, Countess Street, Saltcoats.

Deceased was in the habit of going to the shore for the purpose of bathing his feet in sea water, and it is supposed that while crossing the rocks he fell into the small bathing pond, which at the time was full of water. He evidently was unable to extricate himself, and as nobody was in the vicinity he was drowned. His body was found one hour later.

He leaves a widow and grown-up family.

PROPOSED ESPLANADE AT SALTCOATS

The minutes of the Shores and Improvements Committee last night showed that the question of improving the Braes had been again under discussion and two schemes prepared by J. and H. V. Eaglesham, Ayr, for the construction of a sea wall and esplanade were considered.

The first of these provides for a sea wall far enough out to give a broad roadway at a cost of £7230.

The second provides for a wall nearly out to the limits of the ground acquired from Lord Eglinton, and reclaiming the land for building purposes, the estimated cost being £12119.

The committee behoved that either of these schemes could not be carried out at less cost, and owing to the great expense involved, decided to lay the matter before the Council without any recommendation.

Bailie Millar was not satisfied with the committee’s report, and moved that it be remitted back for further consideration. He thought that a scheme for improving the Braes at less cost could easily be drawn up. Mr McGavin seconded.

Mr Blakely moved that the committee be discharged. He was not in favour of spending either £1000 or £12000 on the Braes mean time.

Mr Arnott explained that to go on with the scheme would mean an increase of 6d on the rates. They would also require to have a Special Order, and that would still further increase the cost. He seconded the amendment.

On a vote the motion was defeated by six to two.

THE SALTCOATS BATHING POND

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council – Provost Donaldson presiding – it was intimated that the sanction of the Board of Trade had not yet been obtained for the construction of a bathing pond at the North Pans.

As it is not anticipated that there will be any objections to the scheme, it was resolved to open the offers for the work, and the council agreed to accept the offer of Mr Charles McAndrew, Ayr.

It was agreed to proceed with the work as soon as the sanction of the Board of Trade arrived.
