I got hold of a pre-release copy of these guys' new album last week. It’s rather good.

King of Birds - probably the best Americana to come out of Elderslie...

Album launch this Thursday 26th in Stereo, Glasgow. Also playing the Bungalow in Paisley on 15 Oct.

Thanks, bonzo- I had never heard that before!

Did you see the boats gaun doon the wattair
Did ye see the baggy minnies scattair
Fine well they know what we are aftair
Wi wir nets and jeely jaurs in wir hauns

A' the day we spent at Saltcoats
An the presents that we all got
Ah goat a stick of rock for ma Auntie Fannie
And a wee salt dish for my mammie

Did you see them queuing for fish suppairs
Yer high fish tea wi yer bread and yir buttair
A' the drunk men lying in the guttair
They were doon at Saltcoats for the fair

Says he tae me whit time are ye leavin, son
Says ah tae him boot hauf eleeven, son
Cos ah'm for the next train up tae Stevenson
Cos ah don't like Saltcoats at the fair

Well Saltcoats goodbye
I hate the smell of yer rotten seaweed never again will I see you,
Saltcoats goodbye.

A sad ending i must declare. Does anybody know what the second line means.

Brian - baggie minnies are female minnows - which has always rankled with me as minnows are fresh water fish - but he’s from Glasgow, so what would he know //funny

Ps I think the males were called docs.

Hi Jean,

Our harmonica group have the Mingulay Boat song in mind for our national Celtic Festival in June. They love the Scottish tunes such as:
Road to the Isles
The Battles over
Blue Bells of Scotland
Skye Boat song
Mull of Kintyre
Wild Mountain Thyme
Scotland the Brave

We are very average but enjoy what we do. :puter

Well done Hughie. All beautful Scottish songs. Since I returned from Scotland I've been playing the Corries nearly every day. It's hard to say which is my favourite. They have some terrific music. Ronnie Browne is also good on the Harmonica, and Roy Williamson plays a variety of instruments, and their voices blend so well. A great Duo. It's a pity Roy died so young.
Wish I could be there to hear you all play the Mingulay Boat song! Jx
