Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building

I started in Miss Miller's class in 1949, followed by Miss Forrest - and then to the fearsome Mrs Blyth in a classroom in a temporary 'prefab' between the primary and secondary buildings.

Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building

Your plan has brought back memories of my time in classrooms 1 - 4 (1948 - 1952) but I also remember a portable 'pre-fab' located outside the main building where the formidable Mrs Blyth taught Class 5s. Here's my attempt at a little plan that I hope gives some reminder of the inside of the building...

Re: Threetowners 20th Birthday Celebrations

Lovely idea to celebrate the 20 year anniversary. So sorry I can't be there to join in. Some years ago I did travel to Saltcoats and was quite upset to see that the top floor of 5 - 7 Dockhead Street had vanished! I was brought up here and my bedroom was a boxroom on the 3rd storey - now gone! I sup...

Black Sheep of the Herdmans

Herdmans Bakery was in Dockhead Street from 1875 to 1968 and the family were generally very respectable but Robert Herdman ran away to sea in the 1880s and ended up in jail in Australia. His story has been published in Melbourne and you can read about him and see his convict photographs on this link...

Don't forget Herdman Bakers - 3 - 7 Dockhead Street. Next door was Elsie Mcdermid's wool shop. Opposite was Thompson Butchers.

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

In the late 1940s/early 50s I was always sent to McPhersons for Sunday rolls. Big and soft and my Nana pulled out the doughy centre before she put the bacon in. I actually lived in Herdman's bakery but we didn't open on Sundays. And anyone remember the two sisters who ran the wool shop next to Thomp...

Herdmans of Saltcoats

I would like to find info on Archie Herdman ( emigrated to Canada after 1918) and Robert Herdman (emigrated to Heidleberg, Melbourne, Oz - died there 1914). The Herdmans ran a bakery in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats 1875 to 1968. More about the family is in the chapter 'Herdmans of Saltcoats' at http:/...
