A Colourful Quarry ( Stevenston )

Post by little plum »

After Sunday dinner I was feeling a bit stuffed and decided to try and walk it off. I invited my life long companion, thats right, my 4teen year old boxer cross to join me. I knew the pace would suit the both of us as I am slowing down myself .
The first 2 images are of a wild rose, the 3rd is when it goes to seed . When these ripened we would put them down our pals shirts.. Itchycoos springs to mind.?

A red rose for the girls.

Hips and haws..such a part of growing up in the area. Itchycoos is right, and they did itch! My mum would give us rose hip syrup, high in Vitamin C, to prepare us for the winter onslaught! (not to mention cod liver oil, yuck! :x )

Delrosa Morag? Eventually taken off the market in 1975 because it had such high sugar levels it rotted toddlers' teeth. We never stood a chance did we?

I remember when I was at Ardeer Pr. and the school asked the pupils to collect rose hips. We were paid a few pence per 1lb, I suppose they must have sold them on to Delrosa to raise funds. I collected them from the old Ardeer golf course, the best area was over the railway line that dissected the course. The rose hip we collected was smaller and more elongated, shaped more like a rugby ball.

I remember collecting them up around Primrose Valley back in the early fifties - can't recall where they were taken. My big sister and her pal Patty Gribben I think looked after that.
