THE BUDAPEST CUP

I was reading the 2 September 1914 edition of the Glasgow Herald today, and came across a match report which which indicated that CELTIC won the Budapest Cup, beating BURNLEY on their home ground. Personally, I had never heard of such a trophy, and, having then googled the following link, am more surprised that I've never heard any Celtic supporter ever boasting about it, being unofficialy described as the first EUROPEAN CUP and/or WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.

Neither have I. However, I know of a trophy in Celtic's trophy room inscribed "Awarded to Rangers F.C.". This trophy was first won in 1901 by Rangers as the Glasgow International Exhibition Cup. The following year, to their credit, Rangers put it forward as the "British League Cup" to help raise funds for the April 1902 disaster relief. Celtic won the competition and the trophy which, to this day, is retained in their trophy room despite the inscription "Awarded to Rangers F.C.".
Were my brother John (aka "Fred") still alive, he could deliver chapter and verse for most, if not every, trophy!

Budapest in Hungary always brings my mind to Puskas, though i do not know why as i was a little boy when he finished playing in 66?

Jim, Reading previous on the forum i was delighted to discover you had seen him play.

So was he that good? i think he must have been.. for me to remember the name.

I saw Puskas playing too, at Rugby Park. Kilmarnock played Real Madrid in the European Cup on the 17th November, 1965, securing a 2-2 draw before a crowd of 25,000. Bobby Ferguson, who lived in Hazel Avenue, Ardrossan, was the Kilmarnock goalie. My recollection of Puskas was that he had what we would call a "beer belly". The popular football chant of the day was your hero's name and then CHA, CHA, CHA - for example, Tommy McLean, CHA, CHA, CHA. The Kilmarnock fans were, instead, were singing, "PUSKAS, HA, HA, HA." He showed them, having a magical left foot which was instrumental in creating both Real's two goals. The return tie in Madrid resulted in a 5-1 victory for the Spanish side.
