Inhuman man! curse on thy barb’rous art,
And blasted by thy murder-aiming eye;
May never pity soothe thee with a sigh,
Nor never pleasure glad thy cruel heart!

For so Thou hadst appointed,
That Thou might’st greater glory give
Unto Thine own anointed!

Blest be McMurdo to his latest day!
No envious cloud o’ercast his evening ray!
No wrinkle furrow’d by the hand of care,
Nor ever sorrow, add one silver hair!
O may no son the father’s honor stain,
Nor ever daughter give the mother pain!

O, could I give thee India’s wealth,
As I this trifle send!
Because thy joy in both would be
To share them with a friend!

How Wisdom and Folly meet, mix, and unite,
How Virtue and Vice blend their black and their white,
How Genius, th’ illustrious father of fiction,
Confounds rule and law, reconciles contradiction,
I sing: If these mortals, the critics, should bustle,
I care not, not I; let the critics go whistle!

The rosy banquet loves to sip;
Sweet the streamlet’s limpid lapse
To the sun-brown’d Arab’s lip.

How daur ye ca’ me ‘Howlet-face’
Ye blear-e’ed, withered spectre?
Ye only spied the keekin’ glass,
An’ there ye saw your picture.

The Deil gat stuff to make a swine,
An’ coost it in a corner;
But wilily he chang’d his plan,
An’ shap’d it something like a man,
An’ ca’d it Andrew Turner.

Now, that could have been the first twitter post or even flaming. Meg ???. :hi:
If he tried that today, he'd likely get sued or at the very least blocked.

Andrew Turner was an English commercial traveller who apparently tried to patronise Burns over a bottle of wine in the Kings Arms, Dumfries, and Burns was asked by his friends whose party had been interrupted by Turner, to give an example of his impromptu versifying. On hearing the Englishman's age and name he produced the above verse.

Ye men of wit and wealth, why all this sneering
‘Gainst poor Excisemen? Give the cause a hearing.
What are your Landlord’s rent-rolls? Taxing ledgers!
What Premiers? What ev’n Monarchs? Mighty Gaugers!
Nay, what are Priests (those seeming godly wise-men)?
What are they, pray, but Spiritual Excisemen!
