NOBEL’S EXPLOSIVES COMPANY AND THEIR WORKERS

Since the Board of Trade decision with regard to the wages paid at Ardeer Factory the Scottish Union of Dock Labourers has been negotiating with the company for the purpose of having an agreement drawn up whereby matters under dispute could be settled without recurrence to a general stoppage.

On Wednesday evening a mass meeting of the workers was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, Mr. James Delahunt presiding over a gathering of about 600.

Mr. G. Lewis submitted a draft agreement which had been drawn up between the Union and Nobel’s Company. The principal points in the agreement were that a central board be appointed to deal with matters affecting the interests of both parties, the board to consist of three representatives for the company and three for the workers and a neutral chairman, the agreement to stand for five years.

The agreement was considered in detail, and the officials of the union were authorised to sign it on behalf of the workers.

Mr. Joseph Houghton, general secretary of the union, reported regarding the conference he had with the company dealing with certain requests made by the workers. He stated that he had been successful in getting some further concessions, which included payment of time and half for overtime and double time for Sunday work. These concessions affected all the men employed in the factory and were equal to substantial increases. In addition a further allowance of 1s per week had been made to youths between 17 and 18 years of age. He further mentioned that the increases to labourers in the factory granted since April last amounted to 3s 2d per week.
