STEVENSTON WATER SUPPLY

At a special meeting of the Local Authority to consider the report of a committee on the water supply – Mr. Adam Wilson, Broom House, presiding – it was moved by the chairman, seconded by Mr. Pennel,

“That the Local Authority of the parish of Stevenston adopt, jointly with the Local Authority of the parish of Ardrossan (if the latter be inclined), the Glen Scheme, as recommended by Mr. Gale, as a joint water supply for the districts of the respective Local Authorities.”

Mr. A. C. McJannet, Irvine (factor of Mr. Warner of Ardeer), moved, seconded by Mr. Service,

“That the Local Authority do not go in for a scheme of their own, but join Irvine Local Authority on the terms granted to Kilwinning for a water supply.”

The motion of the chairman was carried by a large majority.

Mr. Campbell moved, seconded by Mr. Gilmour,

“That seven members be appointed to act along with a like number from Ardrossan Local Authority as managers of the water supply, and works connected therewith, and to have the powers for entering into, carrying out, and completing all agreements, contracts, and undertakings requisite for the completion of the water supply.”

Mr. Service proposed an amendment,

“That a committee only be appointed to ascertain whether the Ardrossan Local Authority be willing to join Stevenston in a water scheme, and report.”

On a division the motion was carried by a large majority, and the following were appointed to act as managers: -

Messrs Adam Wilson, Alexander Frew, James Campbell, John Dickie, Charles Smith, Hugh Thomson, and A. C. McJannet.

Mr. McJannet entered his dissent on behalf of Mr. Warner of Ardeer, and Mr. Alexander Gilmour on behalf of the proprietors of Kerelaw and Mrs Giffen.
