Further evidence was given yesterday at Cardiff at the Board of Trade inquiry into the standing of the steamship CHARING CROSS on the Isle of Arran on January 27.

MINERS’ STRIKE AFFECTS ACTIVITY AT ARDROSSAN HARBOUR

The effect of the strike upon shipping was felt at Ardrossan Harbour last week, both imports and exports having fallen far below the average.

Only one cargo of Iron ore came in during the week, and although several coasting steamers have brought in limestone it has been intimated that the Welsh limestone quarries are likely to be closed in the course of this week.

Practically the whole of the great bing of coal which has lain at the Caledonian engine sheds since the strike of (illegible) has now been used up.

ARDROSSAN RAILWAYMEN AND THE NEW UNION

A meeting of railwaymen was held in the Crown Picture Palace, Ardrossan, on Sunday afternoon – Mr Frame, local secretary of the A.S.R.S. (Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants), presiding.

Mr Kiddie, chairman of the Glasgow District Council of the A.S.R.S., urged all railway servants to join the new union of railway workers.

SHIPPING NEWS

Ardrossan, March 13 – The PRINCESS MARIA, Douglas, of Irvine, sailed from Ballina for Liverpool (grain) the day previous to the gale of 6th ultimo, since which no tidings have been received of her, and it is supposed she has gone down with all hands.

She was a new vessel, and launched in August last year, but when she left Ballina, it is said she was about six inches by the head, and all the chains and lumber on deck.

IMPORTANT SCHEMES IN ARDROSSAN DISTRICT

A syndicate is being formed in the Ardrossan district to carry out an extensive scheme for the attraction of summer visitors.

It is proposed to form a golf course in close proximity to Ardrossan and Saltcoats, and Ben Sayers has declared the site admirably adapted to the purpose, and has expressed a high opinion of the quality of the turf.

Another part of the scheme is to acquire what is known as the Holm Plantation, situated mostly within the burgh of Ardrossan, and consisting of a sheltered and well-wooded stretch of land, through which a stream passes. The Saltcoats mineral well is situated in that small part of the plantation which is within the burgh of Saltcoats.

The intention is to convert the entire place into pleasure gardens and to erect within the bounds of it a pavilion somewhat resembling that at Dunoon.

It is hoped that the whole scheme may be carried out before the summer of next year.

The Selecting Committee met in Glasgow last night when the team was chosen to oppose England at Coventry on Saturday next.

FISHING SMACK FOR SALE AT ARDROSSAN

There will be exposed for sale by public roup, within the Eglinton Arms Hotel, Ardrossan, on Tuesday first, 23rd March, 1869, at 11 o’clock a.m., the smack HOME, as she now lies in the harbour of Ardrossan.

The smack was built in 1867, expressly for the North Fishery, is well found, sails well, is half-decked, and carries about 32 tons.

A CREW PICKED UP BY AN ARDROSSAN VESSEL

The W. H. JENKINS, from Ardrossan, at New York, 84 days, encountered severe gales and westerly winds nearly the entire passage.

“December 27, 9 a.m., latitude 46 46, longitude 20, fell in with the wreck of barque CHINA, of Cardiff, apparently abandoned, whole seas sweeping over her decks, a gale from W.N.W. at the same time.

We were about six or seven miles to the leeward of the wreck, under double-reefed sails, and hoisted our ensign to ascertain if there was any person on board, but saw no sign of life.

The wind veering shortly after, we were ship and fetched the wreck, and saw some men sitting on the forecastle deck; hove to and rescued six men and the second mate after a hard struggle with wind and waves; the men had to be lowered from the end of the jibboom into the boat, as boarding her was impossible.

The second mate died two hours later from exhaustion.

They had been on the wreck 14 days, living on nothing but a piece of pork and what water they could catch.

The captain of the CHINA, mate, and seven men were washed overboard.

Getting short of provisions, had to put into Fayal, January 20; landed the shipwrecked men, and proceeded on our voyage. Since then had very heavy weather and seas all the way, and lost sails, yards, figurehead, and sustained considerable damage.”

A FEROCIOUS RAT

A girl, nine years old, was attacked at Ardrossan Harbour on Wednesday night, by a large rat.

The animal first sprang at her breast, but she contrived to shake it off though it cost her a bitten finger. It next seized her leg just over the ankle, and kept its hold there till it was killed by a workman, who was attracted to the spot by the cries of the terrified girl.
