DEATH OF PROVOST JOHN MULGREW

Mr John Mulgrew, Provost of Saltcoats, died yesterday at his home at 1 Links Road, Saltcoats. He was 59.

Mr Mulgrew, who had been ill for some time, served on Saltcoats Town Council for 14 years. He was elected Provost in 1966, and previously served two years as treasurer.

He was a member of Ayr County Council for six years, and served as their representative on the North Ayrshire Hospitals' Board for two years.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

FOUL PLAY

On Saturday last, a young woman residing in Saltcoats was apprehended and sent to Kilmarnock to be tried by the Sheriff Substitute there, charged with using foul play to her infant child, lately deceased. Its body was opened and submitted to medical inspection. It was said to have received an undue quantity of laudanum.

She was recently married to an Irishman.

Death of Well-known Saltcoats Lady
Mrs Agnes Allen, one of Saltcoats most respected citizens, has died at her home, 7 Hirst Place. She was 70 years of age. Born in Ballymena, she first settled in the town of Stevenston in 1907. "Granny Allen" as she was called, was well known and respected in the towns of Saltcoats, Stevenston and Ardrossan.

Many children have first seen the light of day at the capable hands of "Granny" and her services were appreciated by all the doctors in the district. Her advice and cures for many ailments are still used to this day. and she was never happier than when attending to the sick or doing some old person's washing. In times of trouble she was a friend to many, and all this she did without thought of reward.

Her funeral was attended by a large company of mourners, who paid a last tribute to a grand old lady.
Mrs Allen is survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters.
