SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Play was resumed yesterday morning but players were slow putting in an appearance.

The weather was cooler and more favourable than on the opening day.

CHEMIST’S SHOP BURNED

Yesterday afternoon between two and three o’clock, fire broke out in the premises of Mr. James Walker, chemist and druggist, Dockhead Street, Saltcoats.

The building is of two storeys, and the fire originated in a storeroom on the upper floor. It burned with great rapidity, and in a short time the upper storey was all in flames. Water was carried in buckets, but it had little effect in checking the fire.

The Ardrossan Fire Brigade arrived, and in a short time put out the flames, but by that time the interior of the building had been nearly consumed.

SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Play was resumed yesterday forenoon in splendid weather. There was a small attendance at the start, players being very dilatory in coming forward. Some of the ties were very interesting, but most of the contests were uneventful.

ORDINATION

The Rev. J. R. Spottiswood, lately assistant to Rev. Montgomery, Muirkirk, was yesterday ordained to the pastorate of the North Church, Saltcoats, by the Presbytery of Irvine.

There was a large attendance of the Presbytery, and the church was well filled.

The Rev. Hamilton Moore, M.A., London, conducted the service, which was of a most impressive character.

The Presbytery and friends afterwards dined in the Town Hall.

OPENING OF CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE

This handsome and commodious hall, which has been erected in Vernon Street, Saltcoats, by the Young Men’s Christian Association to provide adequate accommodation for holding meetings, was formally opened yesterday afternoon, when a dedication service was held.

Mr. John Anderson, honorary president, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance.

EXTRAORDINARY CONDUCT OF SCHOOLBOYS

Kyleshill School, Saltcoats, which is closed during the holidays, was entered by, it is believed, several boys, who destroyed a lot of articles and left the place in great confusion.

An entrance to the school was effected by a window which was left unfastened. Seven presses and two desks, which were all locked, were burst open, a pair of tongs being used for the purpose. The contents of the desks and presses were scattered about the floor. Some pencils, school books, and other articles were taken away. There was some filthy writing on the blackboards.

The matter has been reported to the police.

SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

The weather yesterday threatened rain at the opening of this tournament, but cleared off, and the day turned out one of the finest of the season. In the forenoon the green was rather slack, but after mid-day the rinks filled up. Several good ties were witnessed.

SALTCOATS UNIONIST CLUB

At a meeting of Unionists it was agreed to take steps for the erection of a club-house suitable for holding meetings and for purposes of recreation.

A very convenient and suitable site has been identified opposite the Mission Coast Home.

SALTCOATS VICTORIA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

This professional 5 a-side football tournament took place on Brewery Field, Saltcoats, before a large attendance of spectators.

FINAL – Partick Thistle beat Third Lanark by goals and a corner to 4 goals. Great excitement prevailed throughout the game, and it was only in the last minute that Thistle managed to get a corner, winning the first prize of £10. The second prize of £5 fell to Third Lanark.

An eleven a-side invitation gold badge competition took place, when Kilmarnock Bellgrove beat Saltcoats Millpark by 3 goals to 1.
