GLASGOW TOBACCONIST DROWNED AT SALTCOATS

The body of a man was recovered yesterday morning from the sea at the East Beach, Saltcoats, and later identified as that of Mr William McInnes, tobacconist, 175 Cumberland Street, Glasgow.

Mr McInnes was seen in Saltcoats on the previous evening, and it is not known how he had fallen into the sea and been drowned.

ROYAL PROCLAMATION AT SALTCOATS

The accession of King George V was proclaimed at Saltcoats with much ceremony.

The Magistrates and Town Council met, and there were present representatives of Ardrossan Parish Council and Stevenston Parish Council. E Company 4th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers paraded in front of the Town Hall, and Lodge Neptune (Kilwinning) Freemasons were present.

The square opposite the Town Hall was packed with a great crowd of spectators from the town and neighbourhood.

The balcony at the Town Hall was draped and the Magistrates having appeared on it, the proceedings opened with a fanfare of trumpets by the Burgh Band.

Bailie Christie, in the unavoidable absence of Provost Millar, called on the Town Clerk, Mr James Campbell, to read the Proclamation. This was done and at the close the people shouted, “God save the King.” There was another fanfare of trumpets, and the crowd sang the National Anthem.

Afterwards the Town Council met and the toast of “The King” was pledged.

MEETING OF MERCHANTS

At a meeting of merchants of Saltcoats, Ardrossan, and Stevenston – Mr Robertson, Ardrossan, presiding – it was agreed that the annual holidays take place this year on 23rd June and 24th August – the latter day arrangements to be made for a trip to Tarbet.

The following officer-bearers were elected: - President, Mr Robertson; Secretary, Mr John Highet; and Treasurer, Mr Robert Duncan.

SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

Saltcoats Town Council had at their monthly meeting under consideration the question of putting into operation the Housing and Working Classes Acts, 1890 to 1909, on account of a scarcity of houses within the burgh.

The committee appointed by the Council recommended that they proceed no further in the matter.

Judge Hunter moved that the matter be remitted back to the committee for further consideration.

Mr McNaughton explained that this was advisable because the matter had not been fully discussed at the meeting, and in view of the petition signed by about 500 ratepayers urging the Council to adopt the Acts he thought it was necessary that the matter should receive attention.

Bailie Ross said there was no question about the scarcity of housing, because he knew about a dozen families who would be leaving the town in May because they could not get accommodation.

Councillor Wylie moved the acceptance of the committee’s recommendation.

On a vote being taken the recommendation was accepted by 5 votes to 4.

CINEMATOGRAPH LICENCES

The Magistrates of Saltcoats met yesterday and renewed licences under the Cinematograph Act to the Pavilion, La Scala, and the Town Hall.

The licences of the first two were also renewed under the Burgh Act authorising them to give variety and music hall entertainments.

Seven boat-hirers with a fleet of 80 rowing and motor boats, were also licensed.

SALTCOATS AND AUTOMATIC STREET LIGHTING

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council the Roads Committee showed that there had been under consideration a report by the gas manager regarding the adoption of a system of automatic street lighting.

The burgh surveyor had been instructed to obtain and fit up on three lamp pillars three specimens of controllers in order to experiment before making a recommendation.

Provost Miller indicated that if the system was adopted he thought there would be a saving of £110 per annum to the burgh. That amount would be saved in wages, gas, and mantles. The cost of installation would be about £400.

It was decided to await the committee’s report before arriving at a decision.
