STEVENSTON ASSESSMENTS

Last night the Parish Council fixed the assessments as follows:-

Owners – poor rate, 7¾d; school rate, 3¾d; registration, ¼d; and burial ground, 1¼d per £1.
Occupiers – poor rate, 9d; school rate, 4¼d; registration, ¼d; and burial ground, 1¼d per £1.

The amount of assessment is the same as last year for owners, but 1¾d of a reduction for occupiers.

THE AUCHENHARVIE DISASTER FUND

The annual meeting of the subscribers to this fund was held in the Public School, Stevenston, last night – Mr. Robert Bicket presiding.

The annual balance sheet was read over, and approved of. It showed that aliment had been paid to all who were entitled to have benefit from the fund, and that the balance of £2094 6s 1d still remained.

Messrs Adam Wilson and Carrick McDonald were re-appointed auditors.

ARDEER BOWLING TOURNAMENT

There was a large attendance at this green on Saturday. A strong easterly breeze swept across the green and proved troublesome. The green was also keen, so that it was a matter of difficulty to draw near the jack.

BREACH OF THE PEACE

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, AGNES McCRORIE, Boglemart Street, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to breach of the peace there on the 5th instant, aggravated by previous conviction, for which she had just undergone a term of imprisonment.

She was fined £2, with the alternative of 20 days’ imprisonment. She went to jail.

ARDEER BOWLING TOURNAMENT

The second and qualifying ties were played yesterday in showery and breezy weather. The green was in fine condition, but the east wind was against good bowling.


The first tie has now closed, the number of entries having reach 365.

AUCHENHARVIE DISASTER RELIEF FUND

The annual meeting of subscribers to this fund was held last night in the Public School – Mr. Hugh Thomson presiding.

The minutes of meetings and abstracts of receipts and expenditure were read and approved of.

Mr. Kirkhope stated that the committee were negotiating for part of the balance of the fund amounting to £2381 19s 6d being suitably invested.

A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the business.

A DEAR DRINK

A Stevenston J.P. Court yesterday, WILLIAM GALLOWAY HIGGINS, Ardrossan, was charged with falsely representing at the Thistle and Rose Hotel, on Sunday 28th June, that he was a traveller from Kilbirnie, and obtaining a pint of beer.

He pleaded guilty, and was fined 20s or 14 days.

TAKING THE LAW INTO HIS OWN HANDS

At Stevenston J.P. Court, JOHN McCLUSKIE, pit brusher, was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of the peace at Fullarton Place, on 6th instant.

Mr. Robert Bicket, flesher, said accused was lying at his shop door, when witness took the law into his own hands and threw a pailful of water over him (Laughter.) He started up after he got the water about him. (Laughter.)

Witness’s wife kept him from throwing another pail of water over the man.

Two witnesses stated that McCluskie was swearing and creating a disturbance before Mr. Bicket threw the water over him.

The Court fined accused 5s, or three days.

This tournament resumed yesterday in splendid weather before a good attendance of spectators. The green was in capital order, and numerous ties were decided.

MALA-FIDE TRAVELLERS

At Irvine J.P. Court yesterday – Dr. Wilson, of Redhurst, presiding – ROBERT PATERSON, JAMES PATERSON, and ROBERT PATERSON, all pleaded guilty to a charge of having on 17th July, falsely represented to a Kilwinning publican that they came from Kilbirnie, when they had travelled from Stevenston, and thus induced him to supply them with refreshment.

They were each fined 20s, or in default 10 days’ imprisonment.
