ARDROSSAN HARBOUR APPOINTMENTS

The new harbourmaster, Mr. Shields, has entered upon his official duties at Ardrossan Harbour, and Mr. Charles Adair has been appointed depute harbourmaster, with Mr. James Leitch, master pilot.

BOYS SENT TO INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday morning two boys, named NEIL McMILLAN and JAMES McMILLAN, brothers, were sent to an industrial school, the one for six years and the other for seven years, for breaking into an automatic machine situated at the Caledonian Railway Station, Ardrossan, and stealing therefrom a quantity of sweetmeats.

Several previous convictions were recorded against the boys.

Anniversary services were conducted in this church on Sabbath last, the Rev. William Arnott, Glasgow, preaching morning, afternoon, and evening.

The attendance at each of the services was good, and the discourses much appreciated.

STEALING AN UMBRELLA

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday morning, JEMIMA MILLER, a middle-aged woman, describing herself as a cook, and giving Bowling as her residence, was fined 10s, or seven days’ imprisonment for stealing an umbrella from the lobby of a house in Harbour Road on the day previous.

MERCHANDISE MARK PROSECUTIONS

A number of cases under the Merchandise Marks Act were disposed of at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday.

THOMAS HALDANE, aerated water manufacturer, Ardrossan, was charged, on the complaint of the Ardrossan Mineral Water Company, with three separate offences of selling lemonade in bottles on which the complainers’ trade name or description was embossed.

He pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr. W. D. McJannet, writer, Irvine.

Mr. George Wyllie, writer, Glasgow, conducted the prosecution.

The defence was that it was custom in the trade for manufacturers to use bottles belonging to one another, and the practice was not calculated to deceive, as labels were placed upon the bottles to show who was the manufacturer of their contents.

Mr. McJannet produced two bottles of lemonade purchased in a shop in Saltcoats to show that the Ardrossan Mineral Company actually carried on the same practice as that for which they were now prosecuting the respondent, and he argued that they were not entitled to come into court with a case of this kind unless they had clean hands themselves.

Mr. Wyllie said that two blacks did not make a white, and that the proper course was for Mr. McJannet to raise a prosecution against the Ardrossan Mineral Company.

Sheriff Hall thought he was bound by the authorities in similar cases, and he found the charge proved, imposing a penalty of £3, with £1 1s of expenses, or seven days’ imprisonment.

JOHN LESLIE, aerated water manufacturer, Saltcoats, pleaded guilty to two offences, and was fined in £2, with £1 1s of expenses, or seven days imprisonment.
