THE STRANDED STEAMER AUSTRIA ON AILSA CRAIG

The latest information from the stranded steamer AUSTRIA is unfavourable to her being got off, her fore compartment being full of water, and considerable damage, it is feared, has been sustained to the hull below the water-line.

The barometer was falling last night, and a strong south-west wind sprang up during the evening, and it is feared, should the sea suddenly rise, the AUSTRIA will soon become a total wreck.

Pumps have been sent from Ardrossan along with a gang of men, but the position in which the stranded vessel lies renders operations almost impracticable unless under most favourable weather conditions.

SATURDAY 17th OCTOBER 1970

ALL-STAR THISTLE SHATTER ROVERS

LARGS THISTLE 6 – ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 1

Winton Rovers will want to forget their match with Largs Thistle at Barrfields on Saturday when nothing seemed to go right for them.

Thistle, on the other hand, were in sparkling form and Fraser opened the scoring in the fifth minute, taking advantage of an error of judgment by a defender. Largs kept pressing and the quick-silver forward line, spearheaded by Barbour, had the Winton defence split wide open. Cook was given a second chance to hook the ball into the net after the keeper had punted out from a header.

Winton retaliated and, following a corner by Innes and some manoeuvring in the goalmouth, Sneddon scored. Thistle were back on the target and two minutes later Fraser headed home.

After 15 minutes of the second half, Fraser got his ‘hat trick’ by scoring a picture goal direct from a free kick. It was a splendid achievement by an accomplished exponent.

Winton were unable to meet the challenge of the rampant Largs forwards who added two more goals. Seven minutes from the end, Cook smartly headed in a cross from Barbour and the centre forward also ‘teed-up’ for Ritchie to score.

Thistle deserve great credit for their clever team work, their enthusiastic endeavour and their ability to read the game. Barbour, Fraser and Cook received the impetus from the rear which added sparkle to the attack.

Winton, who never let up in their efforts to counter-attack, will accept it as one of those days when their luck was out. Midway through the second half, they substituted Anderson for West.

Largs Thistle: McIlwham; Beattie and Boyd; McMillan, Murney and Ritchie; Cook, Fraser, Barbour, Shaw and Savage.

Winton Rovers: Flood; Robertson and McGarrity; West, Young and McLeish; Innes, Manson, Kyle, Sneddon and Kerr.

SATURDAY 17th OCTOBER 1970

ARDROSSAN ACCIES

CUMNOCK 9 ARDROSSAN ACCIES 17

After losing their last four matches Ardrossan had a nerited win over Cumnock who are always difficult to defeat on their home ground.

It was the fine kicking of scrum half B Gossman, with three penalties and a conversion to a Gus Hunter try which led to Accies' win. John Parker scored the final try for the visitors.

ARDROSSAN ACCIES 2nd XV 46 DALRY 2nd XV 0

In a match that produced some fine play the visitors' young team showed much promise but were unfortunate to meet the home side in a running mood. Scorers : D Cliffe ( 2 ) , W Knox ( 2 ) , I McSkimming ( 2 ) , M Houliston ( 2 ) and R Cuffe, D McGilchrist and Alex McNeil, 1 try each. W Knox, 1 penalty and 5 conversions.

JORDANHILL CSFP 3rd XV 14 ARDROSSAN ACCIES 3rd XV 5

An early injury to Russell Wilson weakened Ardrossan who playing well at times throughout the match failed to put their effort into scores.

Ardrossan's points came when Campbell Cooper scored at the posts and J Templeton converted.

KILMARNOCK 4th XV 10 ARDROSSAN ACCIES 4th XV 6

Ardrossan, playing a man short, found this handicap too great against a team that had many experienced players. Scorers for Accies were P Crook and J Carruthers.

MOTORIST SENTENCED - SIXTY DAYS FOR DRINK OFFENCE - THREE YEARS DRIVING BAN

A sentence of sixty days imprisonment with disqualification from driving for three years was passed at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday on a 38-year-old insurance agent of Hunter Avenue, Ardrossan who pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on the Kilwinning-Kilmaurs road, driven a motor car while he was under the influence of drink to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle. He admitted one previous conviction. The Procurator-Fiscal stated that two police officers on motor patrol duty at 9.30pm on Saturday night (16 October 1937) saw a motor car stuck in the hedge on the Kilwinning-Kilmaurs road and in the car they found the accused and three other men, all of whom were very much under the influence of liquor. Sheriff Martin Laing, in passing sentence, said that accused had been convicted of a similar offence as recently as February of last year and he had not taken that as a warning.

THE WEATHER - ARDROSSAN

On Sunday morning a severe storm was experienced in this quarter, its direction being W.N.W. The storm continued during most of Sunday, and at night it increased in violence and lasted till Monday morning, accompanied by drenching showers and vivid flashes of lightning. During yesterday, though the wind had moderated somewhat, the sea continued very rough.

Several of the trees on the Castle Hill have been torn up by the roots.

During the storm on Sunday night the barquentine MARY BOYD, of Ardrossan, which left Irvine on Saturday with a cargo of coals for Dublin, put back to the harbour here, with sails split and making water. The captain reports heavy weather in the Channel, and attempted to put into Lamlash, but found it impossible to do so owing to the violence of the storm. It is believed that the leak is a slight one, and that the cargo will not require to be discharged.
