The gentlemen second from the right in the middle row is the late Frank James who was the local police sergeant at the time.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Front row third from the right is Jackie Newal who had the grocers shop across from the burgh chambers.
Re: Ardeer Merchant golfers June 1969
Back row right is Jimmy McKechnie and next to him is Jimmy Hourston the butcher who worked with John Brown in his shop in New Street.

Yes, definitely looks like Jimmy McKechan at the back right, as I was a 'message boy' in John Brown's Butchers in the early 70's and I'm sure Jimmy worked there part time. Always had a smile on his face did Jimmy.
I also knew of the Hourston family from Stevenston and seem to remember John Brown speaking of JH on a few occasions - although my only real memory of him was when he had his own Grocery Van (I think).

Slightly off topic, but John Brown the Butcher was also a member at Ardeer Golf Club.
I recall caddying for him at Ardeer on at least a couple of occasions and getting 10 bob or so each time for my efforts - no' bad for a 16 year old at the time.

No doubt it will be the same Hourston family morag, as Hawkhill Place is where I remember them as living.
I believe Jimmy Hourston's son's name was Colin though, not Ian - but see you put a question mark on it so you obviously weren't sure.
