Let's talk Spookies

Post by Hughie »

I first heard this expression back in the 1900s in Stevenston and it confused me. At that time a relative who lived up the top end and I think one of her daughters attended a weekly Spookie's meeting.

Be interesting to see where such a topic goes.

Don't even know if it's in the same vein Hughie but when I joined the A&S Herald as a junior reporter, my more experienced colleagues used to refer to the local spiritualist groups/churches as the Spookies. They, at that time, still could be sure of a good turnout of all ages - and sexes

Not called that, it wouldn't be p.c., lol! As for Stevenston, my gran should have been president! (she and her family were thought to have 'the gift')

Sounds like something to do with ghosts or the supernatural. On that topic does anyone know of any reputed haunted places around the three towns & if so have they been game enough to go into them ?

Don't know about the 3 towns but I've had a few spooky experiences, one at the Burrell exhibit, one at an ancient church in Warwick and dreams.

I'd never heard of the local spiritualists either but there they are in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Heralds of the late sixties and early seventies, listed alongside all the other local churches ; Saltcoats and District Spiritualist Church. They didn't appear to have premises of their own, but held their services and meetings every week in a succession of borrowed local halls and meeting rooms; among those I've found mentioned at different dates were the Masonic Hall, the Old Manse in the Glebe, the New Council Chambers in Green Street, and the British Legion Hall in Sidney Street.

I've never heard of them. Can you tell us something about the meetings - what went on, what was the belief system?

There was a hut up the Hayocks, forget the name of the Pl. it was on, but I think my mum referred to it as Tammy Meenies(sp?), would they have met there?

My first instinct was Craigdene Dr. Anyone remember the hut? or the prefabs there?
