Thanks Lindsay, that's a big help for researchers. We have all made guesses in the past as to what parish we should be looking in. Nice to have people on the spot.

Hello from Saltcoats (it is still sunny!)

I've looked into the boundary stones a bit more. There were four -

1 - at the rear of Dockhead Street (gone)
2 - at the front of Wallace the stationers (later Cooper Wilkies) - in the museum now
3 - at the corner of Green and Dockhead Streets (gone)
4 - Countess Street (still there)

The stones were first erected in August 1782 by J Richie of Busbie and J Hamilton of Sundrum to mark the march between the lands of the Earl of Eglinton and Robert Cunningham of Auchenharvie. This was of course the parish boundaries of Ardrossan and Stevenston as well.

the boundary ran up through the Hirst, into Dockhead Street, across to the corner of Green Street, behind Green Street but excluding the school, through the middle of the Town House, across to behind Countess Street (where the marker is), zig-zaged up behind Raise Street (this was the border of Town Head Mailling), then up the east side of Old Raise Street.

Saltcoats not having a parish of its own often means double work when researching most historical topics as I have to look in both parochial sources. It also confuses visitors to the museum as we are housed in the Ardrossan Parish Church but is sited most definitely in Saltcoats town!
