THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE JUNE FLOODING

At a stated meeting of the Northern District Committee held at Kilwinning yesterday – Mr. Alexander Willison, Dalry, presiding – Major Dalrymple Hay, Dunlop, reported on behalf of the sub-committee appointed to visit Stevenston and inquire into the disastrous flooding which took place in the village in June last.

Major Dalrymple said the flooding evidently arose from the fact of a culvert under the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway being too small, and the information of the committee was that an abnormal flood like that of June was not required to demonstrate the inadequacy of the culvert to carry the waters of the burn.

He moved that the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company to be requested to double the capacity of the culvert. This was agreed to.

Mr. Main, Ardeer, said the Stevenston sub-committee were prepared to recommend that a subscription be taken to cleanse the burn. He suggested that the District Committee might do something to assist in raising the money.

It was held that the District Committee had no power to grant money for such a purpose.

Ultimately it was agreed that the local sub-committee should raise £20, and the District Committee undertake the cleansing of the burn.

THE RECENT FLOODING AT STEVENSTON

At a meeting of the Northern District Committee of Ayrshire County Council held at Kilwinning yesterday, Mr. George Sinclair, Stevenston, drew the attention of the meeting to an alleged inadequate supply of culverts for carrying away the water at the burn at Stevenston, and suggested that the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company, who were the responsible parties, should lay on an additional culvert, so as to remedy matters.

Three weeks ago there was a recurrence of the flooding, and it was hard that the people there should suffer loss by damage and inconvenience, and added that the water flooded their houses and shops, putting them out, and they were continually in terror of flooding.

He moved that the matter be remitted to the Works Committee. Mr. A. C. McJannet, Irvine, seconded, and this was agreed to.
