STEVENSTON THISTLE v. AYR ATHLETIC


These teams met Stevenston. Thistle had the best of the play all through, scoring, with the wind in their favour, 2 goals in the first half, and 1 goal in the second half. The Athletic tried hard to score, but failed.

Result – Thistle, 3; Athletic, 0.

Unsuccessful – Rev. Mr. Taylor, U. P. Church; W. Gemmell, clothier; Hugh Thomson, joiner; Stewart Lyon, dynamite foreman; C. Smith, merchant.

13 APRIL 1897

ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Colonel Dickie, Hon. Sheriff-Substitute – HUGH McNEILLIE, pit brusher, Main Street, Stevenston, was charged with having, on the 10th instant, within his own house, savagely assaulted Elizabeth Taylor or McNeillie, his wife, and Samuel Lundie, pit drawer, his stepson, and committed a breach of the peace.

He pleaded guilty under provocation but this palliation was not admitted, and having been previously convicted he was sentenced to sixty days’ imprisonment.

The April horse market was held yesterday. There were upwards of 100 head on the square.

STEVENSTON – FATAL ACCIDENT

A plasterer’s labourer named JOHN BOYD, 75 years of age, was found lying dead in Stevenston mill-race early on Sunday morning. His face was partly covered with water and he had a severe cut on his head, supposed to have been caused by a fall over the bank, some seven feet high. Deceased had been at a house in the neighbourhood late on Saturday night.

He was married and lived in Kirk Road, Saltcoats.

ARDROSSAN, SALTCOATS, AND STEVENSTON MERCHANTS’ ASSOCIATION

At the annual general meeting of this association it was shown that there was a balance to the good.

Commissioner Duncan was re-elected president for the ensuing year, Mr. Charles Murchie, treasurer, and Mr. Mearns, secretary.

Messrs Norris, Sinclair, Thomson, and Gibson were elected as Stevenston committee; Messrs Thomson, Hamilton, Dunlop, Dunlop, McDonald, and Taylor as Saltcoats Committee; and Messrs Beck, Bryce, Aird, and McAra as Ardrossan committee.

It was agreed to have travelling facilities for going to Dumfries and Carlisle on 23rd instant, also to Edinburgh on 11th June, and the autumn trip to Inveraray.

It was further agreed to close the shops on New Year’s Day.

ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday Edward Welsh, collier, Main Street, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to assaulting John Clasper, florist, in Schoolwell Street, Stevenston, on the 13th instant, and having been previously convicted was fined in £2 or 20 days imprisonment.
