BODY FOUND IN A QUARRY

The body of a man was found floating in Stevenston Quarry yesterday morning.

The quarry is disused and full of water, and the body appeared to have been there for three or four weeks.

The man appears to be about 40 years of age, with dark brown whiskers. He had no coat, vest, or boots on. His trousers are dark tweed with a coin pocket.

The body has not been identified.

AUCHENHARVIE DISASTER FUND

A meeting of the committee was held last night – Mr. H. Thomson presiding – with a view to considering the acknowledgment to be given to those taking part in the work of rescue.

A list of names was submitted of those who took part in the rescue of the men from the time the accident took place till the men were taken out of the pit.

The list showed 34, with 12 officials. Of the 34 it was agreed that 14 should be considered as deserving a special distinction.

It was decided to call a meeting of the men to decide whether they would accept a badge or illuminated address. The officials and five rescued miners it was decided should get an illuminated address.

CHRISTMAS

Stevenston:
Parcels were very numerous at the post office, nearly double the quantity of last year falling to be dealt with, and letters also showed an increase. The post office staff successfully coped with this additional work, and got through it in good time.

At the Parish Church there was a musical service on Christmas Eve. The Rev. R. J. Kyd officiated.

Dear Sir,

AUCHENHARVIE DISASTER FUND

In your issue of this date (December 25) there is a paragraph to say that it has been decided to recognise in some way the services of 14 of the rescuers, either by giving them illuminated addresses or badges, and to give illuminated addresses to five of the rescued miners.

As a subscriber, will you allow me to lodge a protest against one penny of the money being diverted for such a purpose? It was never given with such an object, and it is the property of the widows and orphans for whom it was subscribed.

The names of the heroes (to whom all honour) are not forgotten – they are embalmed in the files of the public prints of the day. Yet I believe, if asked individually, each hero would say –

“When I’m not thanked at all, I am thanked enough, I’ve done my duty.”

I am &c.,
GEORGE STEVENSON
