HOUSEBREAKING

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday JAMES BAXTER, furnace labourer, and JOHN McKINNON, miner, residing in North Square, Stevenston, were examined and committed to prison on a charge of having on the night on the 16th or the morning of the 17th instant, broken into the house of CHARLES WALLACE, a Pole, in Ardeer Square, Stevenston, and stolen a watch.

Entrance had been obtained by the window and numerous articles of clothing were found to have been torn, as if maliciously, a probable explanation of this being the animus felt towards the foreign workers who accept a low rate of wages.

The annual exhibition under the auspices of the Horticultural Society was held in the Public School yesterday.

A table of plants, wreaths, and bouquets, shown by Messrs W. &. A. Dalgleish, nurserymen, attracted much notice and was greatly admired.

Mr. C. O. Lundholm, Dynamite Gardens, exhibited a choice general collection.

There was a good selection of fruit and vegetables shown by amateur gardeners and nurserymen.

The judges were – Messrs R. Brown, Ardrossan; Robson, Dalry; and Dunlop, Kilmarnock.
