SAVAGE ASSAULT
At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday CORNELIUS O’ROURKE, labourer, Ardeer Square, Stevenston, was charged with having, on 9th instant, at Ardeer Square, assaulted John Fitzpatrick, labourer, Corsehill, Kilwinning, by striking him two blows on the face, knocking him to the ground, and kicking him several times on the face, whereby his mouth and lips were badly cut.
He pleaded guilty, and having been previously convicted, was fined in £3 or 30 days’ imprisonment.

ARDEER GOLF CLUB
The competition for the monthly medals took place on Saturday in splendid weather, and with the course and greens in capital order.
The Heys Medal fell to W. G. Cunningham and J. P. Slater won the Robertson Medal.

THE GENERAL ELECTION – CANDIDATURE OF THE HON. THOMAS COCHRANE
Last night a meeting in support of the candidature of the Hon. Thomas Cochrane was held in the Woodside Hall, Stevenston.
Mr. R. Main, Ardeer Cottage, presided, and introduced Mr. J. G. A. Baird, M.P., who addressed the meeting.

STEVENSTON – THE PARISH COUNCIL AND RECREATION GROUND
The committee of the Parish Council appointed to meet Mr. Warner with a view to securing fround near the shore for purposes of recreation had a favourable reception.
Mr. Warner said that it was his wish that the inhabitants should have liberty to go over the common as hitherto so long as the ground was not feued. The barbed wire is to be replaced by plain wire and sufficient openings left in the fence to secure easy admission to the ground.

THE TWELFTH OF JULY – STEVENSTON
The Orangemen, reinforced by the Lodge from Saltcoats, marched through the streets of the village headed by a flute band from Irvine. Their destination was Cumnock, which was reached by the Glasgow & South-Western Railway.
On their return in the evening they also paraded the town accompanied by the band.

Beautiful weather favoured this tournament yesterday, and the green, after the rain, was in splendid trim. Some capital ties were witnessed, and a great many spectators turned out to see the contests.

WOMAN KILLED ON THE RAILWAY
On Monday night, about 11.40, a woman named JANET ALEXANDER or KILPATRICK, who resided in Stevenston, was walking on the Caledonian Railway when she was run down by an express train and killed about 300 yards from the Old Raise Road bridge. The body was discovered early in the morning by a surfaceman.
Deceased was about 45 years of age.

A charge of murdering his wife on 11th June by striking her on the head with his fists was brought against William John McCallum, foundry labourer, Balfour Buildings, Stevenston, at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday, before Sheriff Shairp.
Mr J. H. Goudie, solicitor. Ayr, appeared for the accused, and put forward a plea of guilty to culpable homicide. Pending instructions from the Crown agent, the plea was taken.

A CHARGE OF MURDER
At a Circuit Court pleading diet at Ayr yesterday - before Sheriff Shairp - WILLIAM JOHN McCALLUM, (55), foundry labourer, was charged with having on June 11, at his home, Balfour Buildings, Lundholm Road, Stevenston, assaulted his wife, Mary Burns or Samson or McCallum, with his clenched fist, beaten her on or about the head, and murdered her.
Mr. J. H. Goudie, solicitor, Ayr, on behalf of the accused, tendered a plea of guilty of culpable homicide. The plea was taken pending instructions from the Crown Agent.
