STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

Yesterday was the last day for nominating candidates of the School Board.

The following were nominated: - Hugh Smith, farmer, William Gemmell, tailor; Rev. John Grahame, M.A., Established Church; Adam Wilson, farmer; Rev. Joseph Forrest, M.A., Free Church; William Stewart, colliery agent, Saltcoats; Donald Sinclair, storekeeper; and Rev. George Philp, U.P. minister, Saltcoats.

Seven members are required for the Board. The poll takes place on 5th April.

OFFENCE UNDER THE MINES REGULATION ACT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, JOHN NIVEN, fireman, at No. 5 pit of Auchenharvie Colliery, Stevenston, was charged with a breach of special rule 38 of the Mines Regulation Act, in so far as on the 24th January last, being aware that there was fire-damp in one of the workings, he failed to clear it out, and allowed the men to begin to work there, whereby an explosion took place, and a miner named JAMES LAMBIE was slightly burned. He pleaded guilty.


The Procurator-Fiscal said Niven followed a very general practice of telling the men to “waft” the fire-damp out themselves. It was absolutely necessary that the firemen should understand that this was a contravention of the Act, and that they must strictly adhere to the rules, otherwise they would be visited with punishment.

Niven was fined in £1, with the alternative of 10 days’ imprisonment.

STEVENSTON FREE CHURCH

The annual congregational meeting was held on Monday night – Rev. J. Livingstone presiding.

After tea, the chairman made an encouraging statement regarding congregational affairs.

Rev. J. Mackay, Glasgow, Mr. Morrison, Mr. Thomson, Mr. Cunningham, and Rev. Mr. Findlay, Dalrymple, gave addresses.

The choir, led by Mr. Anderson, gave selections of music with good taste.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION – STEVENSTON

For seven seats the following have been nominated: - Messrs Robert Bicket, flesher; David Donaldson, stationmaster; Robert Ferguson, ironfounder; William Gemmell, clothier; Patrick McLaughlan, railway inspector; Matthew Orr, postmaster; Thomas Oswald, foreman moulder; Rev. George Philp, U.P. Minister, Saltcoats; and Adam Wilson, grocer.

The last five are new candidates. Three of the members of the old Board do not seek re-election.

The election takes place on 7 April.

WIFE BEATING

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, JAMES ARMSTRONG, foundry labourer, Ardeer Square, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to having on the 24th instant, assaulted his wife, Catherine McDade, by striking her three blows on the back and shoulders with a leather belt.

He was fined £2 or 20 days’ imprisonment.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, ROBERT LUMSDEN, brusher, New Street, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to assault there on the 18th instant, and, having been previously convicted, was fined in £2, or 20 days’ imprisonment.

POTATO STEALING

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, CATHERINE LIDDY or SCOTT, Main Street, Stevenston, was charged with stealing 8lb. of potatoes from a field on the farm of Mayfield, occupied by John Wylie, farmer, on the 12th instant.

She pleaded guilty, and having been previously convicted of theft of the same nature was sent to prison for 14 days.
