19 MAY 1886

STEVENSTON PARISH CHURCH

The Rev. G. Park, of the Middle Parish, Paisley, who was to have officiated last Sunday as a candidate for the vacancy in the pastorate of this church, sent a substitute, Mr Park having withdrawn his name from the list.

The committee have resolved not to add another name to take the place of Mr Park, so that there will be seven candidates for the vacancy. These are The Rev. J. Kyd, Dalry; Robert Henderson, Newton-on-Ayr; George Murray, assistant , St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh; A. Allan, M.A., Fairlie; Andrew Robertson, M.A., Rankinston; Andrew Mitchell, assistant, Riccarton; and John Porter, Clelland.

Played at Stevenston, and after a keenly contested game, resulted in favour of Morton by 3 goals to 2.

DROWNING

On Saturday afternoon JAMES SIMPSON, (5), son of Robert Simpson, Moorpark Cottages, Stevenston, was drowned in the flooded area between Saltcoats and Stevenston.

Along with some other small boys he had gone to fish for minnows, and fell into the pool, and before assistance had arrived he had sunk.

The body was afterwards recovered by some young men who dived into the pool.

On Saturday afternoon these two clubs met on Ardeer Green, Stevenston, for a friendly game.

The result was as follows – Ardrossan, 148; Ardeer, 131. Majority for Ardrossan, 17 shots.

The Thistle, aided by a strong wind, scored 4 in the first half, and the advantage they maintained to the end, winning by 4 goals to nothing.

STEVENSTON PARISH CHURCH

The Rev. John Grahame, M.A., B.D., of Stevenston Parish Church, has been presented with a handsome gold watch by the members of his congregation, on the occasion of his marriage, while Mrs Grahame has received a valuable epergne.

The presentations took place at a meeting in the church on Tuesday night – Mr Lithgow presiding.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

This Board met on Monday afternoon – the Rev. John Grahame presiding.

The Chairman moved that the sum to be assessed for next year be £450. By a majority the Chairman’s motion was carried.

Mr Gemmell gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the Board rescind its resolution to build a new school at Saltcoats, and adopt the resolution carried at a public meeting of ratepayers.

The Chairman gave notice that he would rule the motion incompetent.
