Sir,

THE COLLISION BETWEEN THE SNAEFELL AND KALEB

I notice an account of this disaster in your columns on 23 August; but in the short time that has elapsed it is necessarily brief, and nothing appears as to the treatment the passengers received on the SNAEFELL.

As would be expected, the majority of the passengers coming from their holidays were by no means flush of cash. In fact, not a few were without a cent. Will it be believed, then, that not a crust was to be had unless the money was forthcoming? A considerable number tasted nothing the whole time – 22 hours. Comment is needless.

I am &c.,
A PASSENGER

STEAMER CRUSHED BY ICE

The survivors of the Hudson Bay Company’s supply ship BAYESKIMO, which was wrecked by the pressure of pack ice in Ungava Bay on July 23 last, arrived in Montreal on Wednesday.

They tell a harrowing story in the suffering of the 48 men and 2 women cast away, who were marooned 80 miles from land on a drifting ice floe 50 yards square during ten hours of drifting rainstorms.

The survivors were eventually rescued by the Hudson Bay Company’s steamer NASCOPIE.

[The BAYESKIMO was launched at Ardrossan on 18 May 1922. Further details of the vessel are contained in the following link: -
