Reprieve Petition

The petition signed by 450 people in Dunfermline, for a reprieve of Edward Johnstone, the murderer of Jane Withers, formerly of Ardrossan, had no effect. Johnstone paid the extreme penalty of the law on Wednesday morning.

For the record, Johnstone murdered Jane Withers, (25), in a house at Collyford, Fife, by cutting her throat on the 7th June, 1908.

THE ASSOCIATION OF MASTER PAINTERS IN SCOTLAND

The members of this association and their friends, numbering 190 ladies and gentlemen, had their annual excursion on Saturday.

The route selected was by train to Ardrossan, thence round the Isle of Arran in the steamer DUCHESS OF HAMILTON, landing at Brodick.

Anniversary services were held in the above church on Sabbath last – Rev. W. A. Mills, M.A., Glasgow, presenting morning and evening, and the Rev. R. M. Adamson, pastor of the church, in the afternoon.

ISLE OF MAN STEAMER IN COLLISION

The steamer SNAEFELL, Douglas to Ardrossan, due at seven o’clock yesterday morning, did not arrive at Ardrossan till ten o’clock last night. The cause of the detention was a collision with the Norwegian barque KALEB.

Considerable apprehension had been excited in Ardrossan by the delay of the vessel, and a large crowd of townspeople, together with intending passengers who had hung about the town all day, assembled on Montgomerie Pier to await her arrival. When the vessel came alongside the pier three hearty cheers were given.

The captain announced that all was well with the passengers.

Captain Roberts states as follows: -

“About five minutes to six this morning we were just after taking a cast of the lead about six miles east-south-east of Point Corsewall, and we were moving ahead in the fog, when, without any whistle or warning of any kind, the KALEB, carrying press of canvas, struck us, damaging our hull and wheel, and carrying our stairs from the sponson.

The KALEB’s topmast bowsprit and jibboom came down about their ears. She was loaded with timber.

We came to and anchored, and got out our boats offering assistance. We then stood by her till the Glasgow tugboat FLYING SPORTSMAN came along and took the KALEB in tow.

We set about repairing the damage done to the SNAEFELL, and held on our way. About two o’clock we slowed, and hobbled on till now.

The conduct of the passengers was excellent, the ladies being if anything more plucky than the men."

Captain Roberts has repeatedly made the same voyage in the PEVERIL.

The KING ORRY, which had been searching for the SNAEFELL, departed, carrying the passengers for Douglas, about midnight.

A return match – four rinks a-side – was played between these two clubs on Ardrossan bowling green. The weather was fine and the turf in splendid condition.

Result: – Ardrossan, 81; Largs, 39.
