THEFT

At Ardrossan Burgh Court yesterday morning, JOHN MURRAY, labourer, Chapelwell Street, Saltcoats, was charged with theft of seven shillings from the forecastle of the steamer KATHLEEN.

The money was the property of John Hewitt, steward, and had been left in the pocket of a vest concealed under some bedclothes.

Murray pleaded not guilty, alleging he had received the money from Thomas Welsh, donkeyman, who shared Hewitt’s room.

Evidence was led to show that accused was on board the KATHLEEN, and that he had contrived to be left alone in Hewitt’s room for a few minutes. Although penniless in the morning, the police discovered 5s 4d in his possession immediately after the money was missed. In company with another man he had spent 8d in a hotel in the town.

He had been thrice previously convicted of theft. He was convicted and sent to prison for 30 days.

Meekan,

It was a large house at the corner of North Crescent and North Crescent Avenue - opposite the drinking fountain in our day. If you stood with your back to the harbour it was on your left.

PROPOSED ESPLANADE AT SOUTH BEACH

At the monthly meeting of Ardrossan Commissioners on Monday night Mr. Smith moved that a special committee be appointed to make inquiry and report as to what can be done in the matter of constructing an esplanade at South Beach.

He referred to a previous resolution on the subject, which he regarded as being still in force.

The Town Clerk explained that, when last in hand, the project had been dropped because Lord Eglinton could not hand over the ground to the town without the consent of the heir of entail, who is not yet of age. On the other hand, however, the Commissioners might resolve to purchase the ground, as the Commissioners of Saltcoats had done before proceeding with the construction of the esplanade there.

A committee was appointed in terms of the motion.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

Provost Young presiding.

A letter was read from the burgh cleansing contractor, complaining that in the majority of cases tenants had neglected to provide proper boxes for holding household refuse, much having been rendered necessary by the substitution of the daily collection of ashes for the ashpit system.

In his letter the burgh cleansing contractor pointed out that 50 proper boxes were required to replace 244 which were either too small or without handles.

It was agreed to recommend proprietors to assist or to arrange with tenants to provide proper boxes.
