AN ARDROSSAN SCHEME

At the monthly meeting of Ardrossan Town Council – Provost Chrystie presiding – a letter was read from the secretary of the Ratepayers’ Improvements Committee stating that at a recent meeting of the committee with the ratepayers it had been agreed by an overwhelming majority to urge the Council to proceed with the proposal to form a bathing pond at Ardrossan, if a practicable scheme could be formulated.

It was decided to delay consideration of the matter until after the municipal election.

THE WRECK OF THE BALGAIRN

The S.S. SEAMEW and the tug CONQUEROR arrived in Ardrossan on Sunday night from the ill-fated steamer BALGAIRN, bringing the captain and several of the crew.

The CONQUEROR had on board a quantity of salvage from the wreck, and she proceeded to Glasgow.

The captain and the crew left Ardrossan yesterday morning.

DISASTER AT SEA

A telegram was received in Aberdeen yesterday afternoon, stating that the splendid steamer Balgairn, the largest vessel ever built in Aberdeen, bad been Wrecked on her maiden voyage.

The vessel belonged to Messrs. Davidson of Aberdeen, and was built by Messrs. Hall, Russell, and Co. She was launched on the 15th of August with great state in the presence of a vast assemblage, and was christened by the Countess of Aberdeen, a banquet being afterwards held, at which the Earl of Aberdeen presided.

On Monday last she left on her first trip, the intention being to go to Cardiff, take on a cargo, and proceed to Point De Galle. She proceeded by the north passage between Skye on the east, and the South Quist on the west. At a point on Leversay Island, in the Sound of Benbecula, the vessel went ashore this morning, and immediately filled with water. There was little hope from the first of getting her off, but telegrams were dispatched to Glasgow for assistance. The captain, in a telegram to the owners, states that the vessel is likely to become a total wreck. All on board, including a crew of 40 men, were saved.]

SCHOOL ALARM SYSTEM

A £2000 alarm system is to be installed at Ardrossan Academy as a pilot scheme because of the number of break-ins in recent years, Ayr Education Committee decided last week.

Ardrossan Academy is one of only two schools in the county to have the system installed - the other is Onthank Primary in Kilmarnock.

The Education Committee agreed that as a matter of policy all future new schools should be equipped with the system.

They also agreed that the Director of Education and the County Architect be asked to suggest, in order of priority, a programme for the installation of alarm systems in existing schools with first priority being given to recently built comprehensive schools.

CAPTAIN DUNCAN F. CAMPBELL AT ARDROSSAN

Captain Duncan F. Campbell, D.S.O., addressed meetings at Ardrossan Harbour yesterday.

Referring to the unrest in the industrial world, he said that the highest statesmanship would have to be exercised to bring about a satisfactory state of affairs. The sitting-still-and-doing-nothing policy of the Government would in no way help to alleviate present conditions. Liberals had promised ten months ago that the conditions of the working classes would continue to improve under Free Trade, but as a matter of fact everyone knew that the cost of living had increased while there had been no rise in wages. The true remedy was the adoption of a policy of Tariff Reform.

Touching on the Home Rule question, and the published correspondence between Mr. Redmond and Mr. F. E. Smith, Captain Campbell said that the former had attempted to rebut one of Mr. Smith’s accusations by saying that he had been misunderstood. The man who was misunderstood was the man who, in order to capture votes, made ambiguous promises; he was the man who would eventually be found out, as Mr. Redmond was found out.

COLLISION IN THE FIRTH
TWO MEN DROWNED

The steamer WATERLOO, of Tonsberg, arrived off Ardrossan Harbour yesterday, and by means of the harbour tug sent ashore two seamen who were survivors of an accident in which the WATERLOO had been involved a few hours before.

To Lloyds agent the master of the WATERLOO reported that his vessel had been in collision at 6 a.m. off Kildonan with the steam lighter SAXON, of Glasgow, that the latter vessel sank, and that two members of its crew were drowned.

It is understood that the weather was clear at the time of the collision, and it is not known how the accident occurred.

After reporting the WATERLOO proceeded on her voyage from Glasgow to St. Petersburg.

GLASGOW HERALD
25 OCTOBER 1923

SHERIFF AND OVERCROWDING OF CHARABANCS

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday Sheriff Robertson gave judgment in a case involving the question of whether it is competent under the Finance Act and Roads Act, 1920, to challenge the overcrowding of charabancs.

Two charabanc owners in Ardrossan were charged with using charabancs licensed to seat 14 persons for seating in one case 27 passengers, and in the other 25.

The Sheriff held that it was incompetent to challenge under these Acts.

In his opinion the statutory provisions founded on merely prescribed the method of rating a hackney carriage for license duty, according to its description by seating space. No breach of the Finance Act or Roads Act was perpetrated through surplus passengers standing in the vehicle, nor by more passengers than the seats truly accommodated packing themselves therein by reason of their small size or their indifference to discomfort. These things could be prohibited by statute or by by-law though the prohibition would probably be difficult to enforce, but they were not prohibited by the Acts founded on.

If there was an authority to the contrary effect he had not been referred to it, nor had he been able to find it.

He found the accused not guilty.
