ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL WRANGLE

The question of the admission of the public to the meetings of Ardrossan Town Council was the cause of the monthly meeting of the Council yesterday being adjourned till Monday without any business being overtaken.

At two previous meetings the public, but not the press, were excluded, some members holding that the accommodation was not adequate, but when the latest meeting opened three members of the public were present in the Council-room.

Before the minutes were read it was moved and seconded that the meeting be held in private, and after much lively discussion carried by a large majority.

The Provost, declaring that he did not desire to ask the ratepayers to retire, suggested that the motion not be carried into effect. This was opposed by the mover of the motion, and lively scenes ensued, a Councillor defying the Council to have the members of the public present, who made no move to leave the chamber, ejected, and the wrangling was brought to an end by the decision, on a vote, to adjourn the meeting.

FACTORY WORK AT ARDROSSAN

A large part of the premises at Ardrossan which were used by the Air Ministry during the war will soon, it is understood, be taken over by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society Limited, for production purposes.

This information has been received by Ardrossan Town Council from the Scottish Council (Development and Industry).

It is also understood that a fish processing firm are applying for part of the premises.

That was my first reaction Hughie, and I'm still thinking along these lines. However, I don't remember any Co-op activity down The Inches in the 50s.

Away from all their interests in Glasgow Street, the only other major premises I remember the Co-op occupying was the "despatch" in Barr Street?

Yes, that could be it, the Co-op bakery known locally as "The Dispatch". But the mention of the air ministry made me think of the can factory where I believe aviation fuel was canned during the WW2.

ARDROSSAN - FATAL ACCIDENT

On Saturday night the horse yoked to a dogcart belong to Mr Wm. Caldwell, Boydstone, was, it is stated, bitten by a dog at South Crescent, and bolted. The reins broke while Mr Caldwell, Junior, who was driving, was trying to hold the animal in, and he lost all control. Two gentlemen and Miss Annie Caldwell, who were in the cart, were thrown out, and the latter seriously injured about the head. Mr Caldwell afterwards leaped off, and escaped with but slight injuries.

Miss Caldwell was removed to the residence of Dr. Robertson, where every effort was made to restore consciousness, but without effect. She was subsequently taken to the residence of her brother-in-law, Mr A D Bryce Douglas, Seafield Tower, where she died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, never having regained consciousness.

The horse ran as far as Burnfoot - a mile and a half - before it came to a stand.
