RAILWAY CROSSING AT ARDROSSAN

At a meeting of Ardrossan Town Council, Bailie Hogarth drew attention to the fact that the gates at the railway crossing at Princes Street, Ardrossan, were often kept closed for a considerable time. On one occasion recently he observed that they remained closed for seven minutes.

The Clerk pointed out that the law did not allow for shunting operations to be carried on at such crossings, and that the gates should only be kept closed while trains were passing through at a rate of not less than four miles an hour.

It was agreed to report the matter to the Board of Trade.

DEATH OF ARDROSSAN SOLICITOR

The death took place on Saturday of Mr. Thomas Kirkhope, solicitor and notary.

Mr. Kirkhope, who was in his 80th year, had a long record of public service. For many years he was a member and chairman of the local School Board, a member of the old Parochial Board and of the Town Council, and chairman of Saltcoats Gas Company.

He had also filled many important local appointments. He was J.P. Fiscal for the district, acted for the Board of Trade in local shipping inquiries and for the G. & S. W. Railway Company in local court prosecutions, and was a political agent in several General Elections. He was also for a period joint agent of the Clydesdale Bank, Stevenston.

He had retired from his public work and appointments, but still carried on his business as a solicitor and notary.

ACCIDENT

Yesterday morning while a young man named ROBERT MURRAY, engaged as a shunter at Ardrossan Harbour, was passing between two waggons after uncoupling the chain, the engine moved and the wheel of the waggon caught Murray’s foot at the heel and grazed severely the entire foot.

It was at first feared that amputation would be necessary, but it is now thought this may be obviated.

Yesterday the ceremony of letting on the gas to the new holder was gone through in presence of the Commissioners.

As the extension, entered on at a high expenditure of capital after the old works of the Gas & Water Company went into the hands of the Commissioners has been now almost completed, new consumers may look for an abundant supply of good gas.

The whole apparatus has been supplied by the Barrowfield Iron Works (Limited), and Laidlaw, Son & Cain, Glasgow.
