RAILWAY STRIKE

Ardrossan:
Motor transport has been dealing fairly satisfactorily with traffic from Arran via Ardrossan but arrangements were made for the steamer yesterday to sail direct from the island to Greenock instead of to Ardrossan. The passengers there transferred to a steamer for Glasgow.

One train per day each way is still being run.

DEATH

CROSS: At Harbour Place, Ardrossan, on Sabbath evening, 2nd instant, aged sixty-seven, Rev. ALEXANDER CROSS.

DEATH OF REV. ALEXANDER CROSS

This highly respected minister died on Sunday night. It will be remembered that the reverend gentleman was seized with paralysis on Sunday, 25 September, while preaching his afternoon discourse. From this attack he never rallied.

Rev. Mr. Cross was a native of Hamilton, and came to Ardrossan about the year 1845, while yet a student. The congregation of the Independent Church then worshipped in a small hall in Glasgow Street, and Mr. Cross was ordained to the pastoral oversight of the congregation in November, 1846, so that he laboured in that role for over 40 years.

Some 30 year ago the congregation built the church in Harbour Place. Mr. Cross succeeded the Rev. Peter Mather, and had the honour of being the oldest minister in the town, and pastor of the first congregation ever formed in that place.

When the School Board was first formed he was elected one of its members, and continued to hold his seat up till the period of his death. For a considerable time he was one of the elected members of the Parochial Board. In connection with the temperance work he did a great deal of good, and only a few weeks ago the Good Templars throughout North Ayrshire testified their appreciation of his efforts by a testimonial.

The deceased gentleman was 67 years of age.

That's a big ship didn't think they would be able to launch a ship that size the length of a football pitch. Must have been launched into open sea at yard that Lord Lithgow closed.

ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

The monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday – Mr. Thomas Kirkhope, chairman, presiding.

From the officer’s report it appeared that out of a total of 846 children of school age in Ardrossan 827 were attending school, the number in Saltcoats being 732, with an attendance of 720.

A number of defaulting parents were brought before the Board, the majority of the cases being continued for a month on promise of amendment.

The report of the Ardrossan Committee recommended that in accordance with the requirement of the Code a second set of reading books be provided for the children in Standards I, II, and III for the .use of the inspector, and that this be done at the expense of the Board.

An alteration was suggested in the districts of the two officers.

In regard to arrears of fees of those children leaving the infant school to join the higher standards the teachers were instructed to collect such arrears.

The recommendations were agreed to.

In the case of six of a family attending it was agreed to charge the youngest only half fees.
