ARDROSSAN DOCKERS’ STRIKE

Last night Mr. Sexton, general secretary of the Dockers’ Union, addressed a meeting in the open air.

He argued that the present offer of the Harbour Company was inconsistent with the attitude they took up at the settlement of the last dispute, inasmuch as, while they then wanted to abolish over-time, they now offered an additional wage of 3d per hour for over-time. He declared the demand of the men to be a perfectly just one, and asserted that the rate of wages even were the demand conceded, would be at least 1d lower than that paid in other ports on the Scottish coast.

He expressed a hope that the dispute would be settled without a protracted struggle, and counselled the men to be firm.

FIRE IN A DWELLING-HOUSE

Yesterday afternoon smoke was discovered issuing from the window of a dwelling-house over the shop of Mr. Robert Richmond, saddler, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, and examination revealed the fact that fire had broken out in a bedroom of Mr. Richmond’s dwelling-house.

Measures were promptly taken to extinguish it. The bed and bedding in the room were consumed, and a chest of drawers charred.

NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING

On Tuesday afternoon a young lad named FLEMING THOMSON, residing with his parents in Harbour Place, Ardrossan, had a narrow escape from drowning.

Thomson was returning from school, and along with companions went over to the old quarry to amuse himself a little. While running across a bing of dirt at the side of the water, one of his companions gave him a push, and he overbalanced into the quarry.

An old woman who saw the lad falling made an alarm, and John Campbell, who was passing with a horse, heard the cries, and ran to the rescue of Thomson. It was with much difficulty that Campbell managed to save the unfortunate lad.

ARDROSSAN DOCKERS’ STRIKE

There is no sign of a settlement of this dispute.

Some 80 non-union men arrived from Glasgow yesterday morning to take the place of the men on strike, and more are expected today.

The men seem organising in view of a struggle. A strike committee has been formed and several meetings arranged.

Several of the strikers are seeking work elsewhere.

Mr. Wallace seconded.

Mr. Harvey moved that the request be complied with, on the ground that it would improve the amenities and encourage building. Mr. Smith seconded.

ARDROSSAN DOCKERS’ STRIKE

The position of affairs in this dispute is unchanged. The men persist in their demand for an advance of ¼d per ton on the rate paid for the discharge of iron ore, and the Harbour Company decline to entertain it.

Upward of 100 non-union men are now at work, and they are conveyed to and from Ardrossan and Glasgow morning and evening by the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway.
