ARDROSSAN HOUSING SCHEME

On Ardrossan Town Council recently deciding to erect 42 houses, including 28 of two apartments, on the old quarry plot behind North Crescent, Ardrossan, the scheme was taken exception to by some residents on the ground that the two-apartment houses would he built immediately behind the rear gardens of the North Crescent villas, and the upper flat houses would overlook the gardens.

At a special meeting of the Town Council a letter was submitted from Lord Eglinton’s factor stating that he was concerned with the class of house proposed to be erected there, and that he feared there would be trouble with then feuars in the immediate neighbourhood.

After discussion, it was unanimously agreed to rescind the resolution to proceed with this scheme, and it was remitted to the Housing Committee to bring in a fresh scheme.

ARDROSSAN DOCKERS’ STRIKE

As a result of a strike at Ardrossan harbour, the port is idle, except at the Belfast steamer berth. Dockers, cranemen et cetera are all out. Several ships have left for other ports and some have been diverted. Mr Joseph Houghton, Docks Group Secretary of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, who addressed a meeting of the men yesterday, stated that the men have come out principally on what is known as the Lanarkshire iron ore demand in schedule rates. The men unanimoulsy decided to remain on strike pending Mr Houghton’s return from London on Friday when he will submit a report to a further meeting and the whole position will be considered.
