THE WRECK OF THE CHUSAN
BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY AT ARDROSSAN

A Board of Trade inquiry into the wreck of the steamer CHUSAN, at Ardrossan, during the recent storm, was opened yesterday in the Town Hall, Ardrossan.

The sederunt consisted of – Presiding justices, Messrs Anthony Mack and William Mutter; nautical assessors, Captain Pryce and Wilson; solicitor for Board of Trade, Mr Thomas Kirkhope, J.P., Fiscal for Ardrossan; solicitor for owners of CHUSAN (Messrs Baring Brothers & Company, London), Mr Charles Stewart, advocate, London; solicitor for builders of CHUSAN, also Ardrossan Harbour, Mr Ross of Messrs Roberton and Ross, Glasgow; Clerk of the Peace, Mr J. C. Shaw. Captain Robertson watched the case for the Lifeboat Institution.

BLAIRSPEY TRIALS

The cargo steamer BLAIRSPEY, of 4140 tons gross, built by Ardrossan Dockyard Limited, and engined
By Messrs John G. Kincaid & Company Limited, Greenock, for the Northern Navigation Company Limited (George Nisbet & Company, managers), Glasgow, has run successful trials on the Clyde, attaining a speed of 11½ knots.

The Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the CHUSAN was resumed at Ardrossan yesterday morning - Messrs Anthony Mack and William Mutter, J.P.'s presiding, assisted by Captains Pryce and Wilson, nautical assessors.

SHIPWRECK
5 NOVEMBER 1886

ELIZA MACDONALD

The wooden sailing smack ELIZA MACDONALD, built in 1870 by Peter Barclay & Son, Ardrossan, for John MacDonald, Gourock, collided with a tugboat, drifted ashore one mile south of Workington, and became a total wreck.

VESSEL WRECKED
6 NOVEMBER 1942

CAMBRAISIEN

This vessel, built by Ardrossan Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Company Limited, and launched on 22 August, 1921, was wrecked west of Djidjelli, Algeria, on a voyage from Sfax, Tunisia, to Marseille, France, with phosphates and general cargo.

LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN
6 NOVEMBER 1906

NEYLAND

The steel screw steamer NEYLAND – 120 feet in length, 21 feet in breadth, and 11 feet in depth – built by Ardrossan Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Company Limited for John Pettit, Milford Haven, was launched on the above date.

ARDROSSAN FARMERS’ SOCIETY

This society held its annual competition yesterday in the Town Hall.

The show was a most successful one, though some of the departments had rather a meagre display. The roots especially were very large and well formed, and were considered very superior.

Silver medal presented by Mr Symington, Saltcoats, for the greatest number of prizes and points at the three last competitions, gained by Mr William Caldwell.

The usual dinner followed the show.

THE WRECK OF THE CHUSAN

The body of SAMUEL MUNRO, the coloured seaman who leaped from the fore part of the CHUSAN while it was entering the harbour, and fell into the water, was found on Thursday morning on the beach at Burnfoot, about a mile from the spot where he fell. The body was very much decomposed, and identification was difficult.

On Thursday morning a service was conducted at the hospital in the harbour over the remains of the late Captain Johnson, of the CHUSAN, previous to the removal of the body to Glasgow.

At the hour appointed a number of the officers saved from the wreck of the vessel were present, among whom were Captain King, Mr Johnstone (chief officer), Mr Humphreys (purser), &c.

The Rev. George Lakeman, M.A., Ardrossan Episcopal Church, conducted the service, and read in an impressive manner the burial service of the Church of England.

LAUNCH AT ARDROSSAN

The Ardrossan Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Company Limited launched yesterday from their new yard the steamer GLASSFORD, built to the order of Messrs Mann & Macneal & Company Limited, Glasgow, for the French coal trade.

The vessel will carry 4000 tons, and will be fitted with triple-expansion engines by Messrs McKie & Baxter, Govan.

This is the second vessel launched from the new yard.

BODY FOUND IN HARBOUR

A body found floating in Ardrossan harbour has been identified as that of EDWARD BELL, (26), labourer, who resided at 1 Alexander Street, Alexandria.

Bell left home nearly a month ago to pay a visit to Ireland, and he is supposed to have fallen in the harbour while making his way at night to the Belfast steamer.

THE ARDROSSAN ROCKET BRIGADE

The members of the Ardrossan Brigade were brought together for practice yesterday, the scene of the operations being the wreck of the CHUSAN, now stranded off the harbour.

The practice was conducted under the superintendence of Captain Wilson, of the Board of Trade.

When the preliminaries had been all arranged, a rocket was sent off, which passed across the sunken steamer towards the stern. The triangle was then erected, and the life-saving apparatus passed on board. A man took his seat in the cradle, and was brought from the steamer and landed on terra firma. A period of 40 minutes elapsed from the time the rocket was fired till the man was landed.

The general idea among onlookers was that the brigade ought to have more frequent practice.
