NEW CHURCH OPENED AT ARDROSSAN

The new Roman Catholic Church, St. Peter in Chains, Ardrossan, was opened yesterday.

Ardrossan parishioners were, prior to the erection of the church, attached to the congregation of St. Mary’s, Saltcoats, and services were also held in a hall in Ardrossan.

The new church has been built on the site and in the grounds of The Pavilion, South Crescent, a residence formerly belonging to the Eglinton family.

The building, which is of unusual design, cost about £10,000 and accommodates 300 worshippers.

Messrs Gillespie, Kidd and Coia, Glasgow, were the architects.

There was a large congregation at the opening service, at which High Mass was celebrated.

The Most Rev. Donald Mackintosh, Archbishop of Glasgow, officiated.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

On Thursday evening this Board met in the Saltcoats Town Hall. Mr. James Fullerton presided.

Several pauper cases having been disposed of, Mr. Ingram moved, in accordance with previous notice, “That all pauper children be sent be sent to the schools under the School Board for education.” His motion did not embrace the children of Roman Catholic parents.

A discussion followed, in the course of which it was mentioned that at least 60 children were being educated by the Board, the majority of whom attended Board schools. The inspector stated that he had communicated with the Board of Supervision on the subject. That Board was of opinion that to insist on sending children to these schools would be illegal, besides being an unnatural interference with the rights of the parents.

The members of the Board, while sympathising with Mr. Ingram’s motion, thought it would be wise to withdraw it in the meantime and that gentleman accordingly did so.

ARDROSSAN – SUICIDE

Yesterday morning the body of a man, apparently a little over 30 years of age, was found on the shore at the Inches, Ardrossan.

When examined it was found that the deceased had been shot through the heart, and a six-chambered revolver was lying at his side.

It was afterwards discovered that his name was WILLIAM GIBSON, and that he belonged to Newmains, where his parents at present reside. He had been a commercial traveller, but for some time before his death was unemployed.

Early yesterday morning also, a note was found lying in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, written presumably by someone contemplating suicide. It contained a statement to the effect that although the writer intended to commit suicide by drowning himself he was perfectly sane and in good health. He had, however, it was added, been in difficulties lately. The note is apparently genuine, but the police are of opinion that it has no connection with Gibson’s suicide.

The affair caused considerable sensation in the district yesterday.
