PASSENGER TRAFFIC TO IRELAND

The shipping companies dealing with the Irish passenger traffic have informed the Home Office and local Irish Permit Office that they cannot hold themselves responsible for any passengers holding permits who may be unable to get accommodation on board the steamers. They point out that passenger accommodation is very limited, and will be inadequate to accommodate intending travellers to Ireland in anything like the numbers hitherto carried.

This applies particularly to the evenings of Thursday, July 11; Friday, July 12; and Saturday, July 13, from Glasgow and Ardrossan to Belfast.

They also point out that they have received notice from the Board of Trade that the number of passengers to be carried per steamer will be substantially reduced.

Members of His Majesty’s Forces in uniform have preference, and this also largely reduces the accommodation for civilian passengers.

The crew of this lifeboat were inspected by Captain Robertson, R.N., yesterday.

We understand the inspecting officer expressed himself satisfied with the efficiency of the crew.

ARDROSSAN – THE FAIR

The annual fair was held yesterday, and the weather being fine, there was a large attendance of farmers in the district.

The show of cattle, principally Irish and Highland one-year-olds and two-year-olds, was large as in former years. The demand was dull, few sales being effected, as farmers were unwilling to give the prices asked. One-year-olds and two-year-olds brought from £3 10s to £9 10s.

About a dozen horses were exposed for sale, but did not find purchasers.

ARDROSSAN CASTLE OPEN TO PUBLIC

Magnificent weather has been experience at Ardrossan for over a week and the numerous visitors are spending the ideal holiday. The Town Council has fixed the sand-building competition for children to take place on Wednesday 17 July so that Glasgow children will have the opportunity of competing for the prizes. Steamboat traffic at the harbour has been very heavy, the Arran, Belfast, Portrush and Isle of Man sailings proving as popular as ever. Bathing, boating, fishing and golf take up the time of most of the resident visitors while others are finding the motor drives along the coast very attractive. The underground well at the Castle has been only a few days open to the public and already over four hundred persons have visited it.

ORANGEMEN AT ARDROSSAN – 40000 TAKE PART IN DEMONSTRATION
About 40000 Orangemen attended a demonstration at Montfode Park, Ardrossan on Saturday (5 July 1947). The procession included contingents from the various lodges in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire and one of a thousand from Belfast. Brother F D Dorrian, Grand Master for Scotland, presided and Brother Grant, Senior Deputy Grand Master, said the gathering was a complete answer to their critics who claimed that Orangism in Scotland was dead. All over the world, the Orange institutions were still determined that no organisation or Government would take away the liberties that had been handed down to them. Headed by flute, pipe and accordion bands, a procession of about five thousand Orangemen passed through the streets of Glasgow following the demonstration at Ardrossan.
