ARDROSSAN-BUILT SHIP FOUNDERED
19 AUGUST 1931

The CUMBRAE, built in Ardrossan in 1881 by Archibald Boyd, Ardrossan, for James Macfie, Millport, foundered in Brodick Bay, Arran, during a gale, while en route from Brodick to Irvine with a cargo of sand. The crew were saved.

The owner of the CUMRAE at this time was probably George Stewart, Kildonan, Arran.

THREE BOY STOWAWAYS ON IRISH BOAT
SENT HOME TO GLASGOW

Three Glasgow boys who stowed away on the steamer LAIRDSWOOD, which reached Belfast from Ardrossan, appeared later at Belfast Police Court.

Two told the Magistrate that they wanted to find work in Belfast. The third said he wanted to see what Belfast was like.

The Magistrate ordered that they should be sent home by last night’s boat.

The captain of the ship (Mr. John Cameron) said that the boys stole on board at Ardrossan, hid in the lifeboat, and were found shortly before the vessel reached Belfast.

“PARRITCH AND AULD CLAES”

From Douglas to Ardrossan light
The churning screw repeats the tune;
From London in the deep of night
The engine sings it to the moon;
The paddle beating from Dunoon
In every ear the music plays
The requiem of honeymoon:
“Parritch and Auld Claes!”

Farewell to shore, and stream, and height,
The flowery glen, the ferny fall;
The moonlit waters silver white,
The sand’s alfresco concert hall;
We hear afar a sterner call,
And bravely with the stoic phrase
We epitaph them one and all –
“Parritch and Auld Claes!”

The mist obscures them from our sight:
The mist may never rise again;
But who would live for mere delight?
We are not butterflies but men:
With hand and brain, with spade and pen
The monument of toil we raise;
A draught of summer wine – and then
“Parritch and Auld Claes!”
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
