SALTCOATS – BATHING FATALITY

Yesterday afternoon a visitor named Mr. David Sharp, residing at 12 Willowbank Street, Glasgow, who was staying here, went in for a bathe at “The Plumb,” opposite the public park.

It is supposed that he was seized with cramp, because some people on the shore noticed that he was in danger of being drowned.

Mr. John Jackson, Raise Street, and a visitor went into the water and brought Mr. Sharpe ashore in an exhausted state. Doctor Core, of Glasgow, happened to be at the shore, and rendered medical assistance.

Mr. Sharp was removed to the private hydropathic at Winton Circus, where he received treatment, but never recovered.

Deceased was about 65 years of age.

Penny Tray - You have posted numerous posts about the danger of the area around “The Plumb”. Could the deceased be a victim of this hazard, rather than Cramp. Dont suppose we will ever know..

I can only reproduce what is reported in the newspaper of the day but I think you are absolutely right. The common denominator for drownings on the South Beach between the Ardrossan end and the former Yachting Pond at the Saltcoats end is "THE PLUMB." I could be mistaken but I don't think I've previously posted drownings at any other point, certainly not ones a of recurring nature. Youngsters of the 1950s would never have dreamt of swimming at this location (we were always warned about "The Whirlpool") and most of the victims over the years have been day trippers or holidaymakers who were unaware of the danger.

And most of us, I think, swimming against the effect of a "whirlpool" or tidal phenomenon would ultimately suffer from cramp.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

A communication was read from the Local Government Board giving their decision on the points submitted to them by the Local Authorities of Ardrossan and Saltcoats.

With regard to the number of representatives to be appointed by each Local Authority, that question did not come within the power of the Local Government Board to determine, but they considered that equal representation would be a very reasonable arrangement.

As to the cost of purchasing and furnishing the Joint Hospital, Ardrossan should pay 13/25ths and Saltcoats 12/25ths of the total expense.

The establishment charges such as salaries of officials &c., to be borne by the two Local Authorities in same proportions as above stated.

The cost of patients to be charged to each Local Authority according to the number of patients sent to the hospital and the length of time they have been in.

The Commissioners approved of the decisions arrived at.

A claim by Mr. Walker, chemist, for £226 18s 2d on account of the Commissioners setting back his property in Dockhead Street was considered in committee.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The half-yearly statutory meeting of the Parochial Board was held on Thursday night – Mr. J. L. Bailey presiding.

The inspector reported that the total number of poor chargeable at 14th May, including dependants, was 203, against 170 last year, being an increase of 33.

The total ordinary expenditure was £1738 4s 6½d against £1625 13s 6¾d last year, an increase of £112 10s 11¾d, caused chiefly by the increase of registered and lunatic poor.

SALTCOATS TRINITY CHURCH

The Rev. George L. Carstairs, Glasgow, conducted anniversary services in this church on Sabbath forenoon and evening.

There was a missionary service for the young in the afternoon, Rev. J. Drummond Taylor officiating. The collection amounted to £21.
