SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Greater interest is manifested in this tournament as the play for the first tie proceeds, and this was shown by the large additions to the spectators on the banks.

Beautiful weather favoured the players, although at mid-day it was rather hot.

ACCIDENT

On Saturday afternoon Mr. James Miller, builder, was on the roof of a two-storey house in Quay Street, Saltcoats, along with a mason, Robert Brooks, cementing the gable of the adjoining house, when the ladder broke, and both fell to the ground.

Mr. Miller sustained a compound fracture of the left leg, but Brooks escaped with little injury.

Dr. McClymont attended to the injuries of Mr. Miller.

A labourer who was also on the roof at the same time had a narrow escape, but he fell against the attic window, and was able to hold on till a ladder was held for him to reach the ground.

THE JEAN

The wooden two-masted sailing ship, JEAN, launched by an unknown Saltcoats builder in 1806, caught fire while anchored in Lamlash Bay, Arran, on the 17th of July, 1887. It was towed to shallow water and scuttled as a total loss.

The Board of Trade inquiry held the master culpable, being the only person on board on the day the fire began, and amid suspicion that it may have been started deliberately when the vessel was over-insured.

SALTCOATS – THE PROPOSED NEW TOWN HALL

At the meeting of Commissioners the clerk reported that he had prepared transfers by nearly all the shareholders of the present Townhouse Society, and that as to those shareholders who had a completed title to their shares and who stood at present on the register as subscribers or shareholders, some of the transfers are taken in favour of the Commissioners as individuals, in order that each of the Commissioners should have a qualification to be a member of the committee of the Townhouse Society.

He also reported that he understood nearly all the present shareholders had expressed their willingness to transfer their shares.

In the event of the transfer of the shares of the Townhouse being completed as above indicated, the clerk was instructed to have the details and instructions to architects for the building of the new Town Hall.

THE FAIR HOLIDAYS - SALTCOATS

From whatever cause – the cheapening of railway fares, the increasing popularity of the town, or the fine weather which succeeded the cold and wet of the last few days – the number of visitors from Glasgow at the Fair holidays has been considerably in excess of any similar occasion previously.

Most of the strangers had taken the precaution to arrange for lodgings beforehand. Those who did not do so, trusting to the chapter of accidents for something to turn up, were in many cases grievously disappointed, or were only successful after a weary round of searching. Several returned to town, and a number slept out of doors on Friday night.

The streets on Saturday presented an animated appearance. Of course, the shore was the principal attraction, and here there was an ever-changing crowd of visitors promenading, lounging, or bathing. Others took to boating or fishing for pastime.

The weather was beautiful.

Yesterday this tournament was continued, when there was an increased attendance of visitors.

The weather was dull, and several showers fell, but a cool breeze was blowing all day, and the day was favourable for play, although the green was heavier than last week.
